Looks good, you will have to keep us updated with how they drive and wear.

(Sorry for the quick hi-jack)
Danny @pngunme ,
You might look at the generic fender flares sold by JC Whitney et al... You don't have to cut out the rear wheel wells and you just drill into the flange of the rear/front fenders not the surface of the quarter panels- much less invasive/easy to reverse since you are running 31x10.5's on 44. I used them along with mud flaps front and rear on the '72 ranch cruiser for my mom/step dad so there would be less mud/cow poo thrown up by the 12x15 bias mud grips when they drive around the pasture. You know what you have to do to keep the 'rents happy sometimes... I bought the 25 foot bulk roll and had some left over after doing all four fenders. (will look for a pic to post of it)
HTH,
Will

PS- I am very sorry for the loss of Sgt. Gunner to you and your family and to those of us in the community that loved him as well even though we never had the chance to meet him in the flesh. He will be waiting for us to escort him on the grand tour of the other side when we arrive.

Here is a pic of the flares installed on the cruiser... I have since trimmed the corners for a better "curb appeal" and added small pieces of metal to brace the ends of the flares out like the rest of the flare.
HTH,
Will
(thread hi-jack off now)

Thanks Will!!

... and thanks for the very kind words!!

It always amazes me when consumers settle for "cheap" tires. Especially TLC enthusiasts, why would you put the "least expensive tire you will find" on your truck??

Perhaps...

1. Testimonials from friends and acquaintances.
2. Best they can afford to run on a recreational vehicle.
3. Personal preference
4. None of your business.

Sorry, but your musing was an unprovoked, rude and potentially embarrassing attack.

I will do that. Someone has to try them out! I hate never finding reviews.

Me know how they ride. Up in the air between MT and AT
They are pretty quiet for MTs. That was something I read on the reviews I found as well. Why not go MTs? I didn't care about noise anyways. This isn't my daily driver and it looks way better with them.

Wheels and tires look great!!

I like the fender flares too!! Please tell me about them... What brand? Where's you find them?
They're Bushwhacker flares. I've had them for a couple years along with the corner guards. Finally put them on a couple weeks ago. You can order them from almost anywhere. Just Google them. I trimmed about 1.5" of fender. If you don't want to cut your fenders, I've seen some people just paint it black underneath. I think they were $150-$175. They perfectly cover the rust spots from the spot welds!

To be honest, budget was a concern, but I didn't buy the least expensive tire I could find. I researched and found reviews that were positive, but unless people like me try them out and report on them, then how will the rest of you all know if they're worth a s***? I liked the design, aggressive tread, 20/32nds tread depth, adequate siping, and the price. They're 10 ply tires with 3 ply sidewalls. The only negative I read was tread wear because of a softer rubber compound. I've put 4k miles on my 40 in the five years I've owned it. Not too concerned about putting too many miles on the tires. Softer rubber sounds like more grip on rocks to me...

I had BFG ATs on it for the last 2 years that I ran for 10 years and 60k miles on my Tacoma before that and I loved those tires. Great tires, no complaints. I replaced those with Goodyear Duratracs that have been on my Tacoma for 2 years and I hate them! They wear uneven, and quickly. They're only two years old and I might get another year before they need replaced. My shocks, ball joints, alignment, etc are all in great shape and have been inspected more than once by the tire shop I bought them from. Two "Big Name" brands and two different experiences with their tires. I would loved to have bought BFG KM2s, but for $850 vs $1250 for a set, I'll save the $400 and invest in a locker. This isn't my daily driver, it's just a play toy. So why not try out some cheaper, off-brand tires?

Just figured I'd add some more detail and pics if you're interested. Here's some before and after pics of trimming the rear quarters. Sorry I didn't take pics of the same side each time. I know a lot of people hate diamond plate corners and fender flares, but I just wanted you to see the difference. My rear quarters are shot. Someday when I can afford it, she will get a new tub, but for now this improves the looks to me. The spot welds are bad, especially on the passenger side. The rear corners were all but gone once I beat out the Bondo someone covered the rust with. I have spent my money making this mechanically sound since I've owned it. New brakes, clutch and brake masters, battery, electrical, engine tune up, tie rods, power steering, fluids, new shocks, bushings, and lift springs, heater core rebuild, etc. Also a rear bench seat so my daughter's car seat could have a place!

It sure covers up the ugly spots!

After working on my '70 FJ40 now for 29 months, I had to be frugal and get the best bang for the buck out of all the repairs and modifications I have done. I had to watch the dollars! Getting a budget brand tire is okay, its his money and he can do whatever he likes with the $'s and the 40. Personally I like the look of the tires and would consider the brand when I am in the market again.

The diamond plate is something I would avoid like the plague. Mine was covered with homemade diamond plate which was cut with a hack saw. It covered the bad places but trapped water behind it making things worse.

Looks good but as stated above do yourself a huge favor and douse the areas behind the flares and plate with fluid film or the like. My rig is all fresh steel and paint and im still doing it.

Thanks for the pics and info!!

I love the look of your flares!!

I don't plan to cut my fenders and am not convinced I am going to add some... It's seldom muddy where I wheel and flares aren't required in NV... But, I keep information like this and mull it over, time-to-time.

Thanks again!!

What kind of rear seat did you use? That's cool u still have the pto winch. Does it work? Do the tires rub on the tie rod when u turn?

It's a Smittybilt fold and tumble vinyl bench seat. Caught it on sale for $150 online, but I think they're normally $200+. Winch works great. It will pull anything! I've got about an inch and a half of clearance from the tie end on the drag link all full turn. I've also got a 1 1/4" bolt on wheel spacer to make the rims fit. They were originally for my Tacoma and have 4.5 inch backspacing and wouldn't fit without them.

Thank you for this post! Tire/lift shopping now and this HELPS. Tires look great. I have been looking at the KM2's but this might be a winner.
