    Engine smoke and smell

Yeah, too much of a coincidence. Synthetic is more 'fluid' :) But so far smell has sort of disappeared, and now hoping for the best (maybe a year as you say). Have parked the LC and driven the other car for a little while, and I hope that small droplets (currently have paper underneath for...

Reputable mechanic in Seattle area for 1974 Crusier?

Thanks - and sorry for a late reply. I'll pass that information to my neighbor who will pass it on to the owner of the LC (do not know where he is more than Seattle area).

Reputable mechanic in Seattle area for 1974 Crusier?

Asking for a friend of a friend (really, I have a 100-series...) who is looking to get 'assist with drivability' for a 1974 LC. I have no other information about condition, exact model, etc. Just asking for a mechanic that is decently well versed in these work horses.

    Engine smoke and smell

Did tighten the surprisingly VERY lose valve cover bolts. Both sides were hand tight, if even that, but only right side showed signs of a leak. Also lifted the cover for right cam/timing belt to ensure that it was not the cam seal. Timing belt and area inside looked as good as new. Three easy to...

    Engine smoke and smell

Interesting. Had the exact same issue in December as well, after changing over from regular to full synthetic oil at 135K miles. It started smelling 'rubbery' after a few days... Feared the worst at first as it looked like a leaky steering rack (yet no lost oil there), but opein inspection see...

Heater / ventilation fan / blower question

Ouch, totally different part. Glad you got it out. Can you open it up and physically inspect it and look for cold solders, or mechanical failures?

Heater / ventilation fan / blower question

That diagram matches what I have in my 1999 and what I encountered back in 2008 when I had to deal with this - and it sort of solved itself... Sorry I can't be of any greater help here. Wiring is different (and it also looks totally different from what I can recall).

    When to replace Ignition coils.

New and old spark plug. Both carried about the same electrode gap, about 1.0 mm, so I left it at that (should really be 1.1 mm). Really not much visibly used (even after cleaning it up). Did only do one plug yesterday as I was running out of time, and will replace all the other ones when the...

    When to replace Ignition coils.

Goodies arrived yesterday - and yes, will do plugs as well here today. I am just as curious as 2001LC to see what (if any) difference there is in condition on the plug. They are due to be replaced anyway.

    When to replace Ignition coils.

1999, 126K miles, first and only coil so far.: Car started running horribly rough, felt like "chugging" even when going very slow (so bad I feared it was possibly the torque converter as idling initially seemed OK). Slowly limping home I passed O'Reilly's so I stopped to borrow their code...

Programming a Transponder Key for 99 TLC

Yes, might not have read all posts, but the "transponder" in an OEM key is in the same assembly that houses the remote (and can be moved to a new empty key shell). If you have a "non-remote" key, the transponder chip is embedded in the plastic/rubber "handle" and needs to be programmed. I was...

Programming a Transponder Key for 99 TLC

Are you sure the transponder chip in the key is good? I know, hard to maybe impossible to test. Have tried with other keys are well? You could have a (remoteless) transponder key cut and you could try with that one.

Programming a Transponder Key for 99 TLC

The key that "happens" to be in the lock and is (duly) registered is the "master" key.
