97 Collector Edition - Burning Oil

The 80s are pricey these days. You might want to estimate a budget if some major repairs are needed (HG, engine, trans) & compare that to the cost of buying something with less miles. I paid $7500 for mine in 2015. Tripple locked, orig owner, all service records, 178K miles. You can save a...

    80 series rebuild value

Like he said, take your time. I got mine from original owners who never off-roaded it and they had all maint records since new. You definitely want the later years 80 with 1FZ engine. Mine has 33" tires and can't get up a hill when loaded. The best MPG I ever see is below 14. Otherwise they are...

92 FJ80 steering lock and not starting issues

You get that thing figured out yet? My '97 key won't turn at all to unlock steering column let alone crank it over. Good luck

Experience with different sized winches on an 80 series

You want very good wires feeding that winch. 2GA min and keep the run length down. Contactors are good as stated above. I prefer Warns and they are very simple to rebuild if you score a deal on Craigslist or some such. Good luck and have fun!

    Recommendation - Engine Rebuild mechanic

That sucks! How many miles are on yours? Are you sure it isn't valve train noise? Yes, the green ones are superior in all aspects. Everyone knows that!

What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Not too many pics taken this weekend. But the break was a much needed one. Loving this 80 with each day that elapses. Still a work in progress. It was nice to meet you guys at Borrego today. We had a nice run / hike up Coyote Canyon. Nice running into you guys at Borrego today! We had a good...

Wheel Bearing quality survey - chime in now!

Thanks for the information all! Mine are all Timken USA. This is the first major service on the rear end / brakes under my ownership (180K miles). Driver side didn't have enough preload so the inner cup shows some discoloration but no pitting. Rollers look great. I've decided to run what I have...

Wheel Bearing quality survey - chime in now!

Hi Mudders, Looking for your experiences with wheel bearing replacement and how well they held up. I'm personally reluctant to buy China for fear of failure like I've seen in friend's vehicles. I'm hearing some major brands (SKF, Timkin) are manufacturing in China so I'm wondering if the...

    Do I want an 80 series ?

80s ride great and are super robust. 80s have live axles like old school iron but have all the handling issues worked out. You can jump them without bump steer! You get power windows, power seats, great heat and AC etc........ and sometimes locking differentials if you take your time finding the...

What should I do with my fzj 80?

Like Rigidarm said, the venerable LC80 is going up in value and destined to become a cult classic!! Stay invested my friends. I still own two early Broncos and I honestly rather wheel my 80 even though it's a under-powered luxury slug compared to my well tuned FOMOCO product.
