I don't think the 253 was the problem I'd say the axle was faulty and was just coincidence that it broke not long after the install as you said it's not a powerhouse.

Well I have uncovered the 45 this morning and been looking over it to re-remember what needs to be done, there is a fair bit and I won't know the true condition of the body until I strip some of that white paint (no time soon) I have found some spots I suspect there is bog probably covering rust...
