Desmoged, but can it still pass the test?

As a fun experiment I really tweaked out on my 79 that was desmogged with a 2F. It passed the tailpipe (everything but NOx was way low, NOx was right at the limit) but there chance in hell it would ever pass visual. Was going to resmog but chose to sell it. If it won’t pass visual you’re dead...

My Dance With The Princess - A Tragic Love Story

I met Princess in October of 2010. I worked at what was then a well known high end four wheel drive shop in LA, the owner came in asking for help sourcing parts for his rear disk brake conversion. It needed pads and rotors, so he said. Me, being the only person in the shop with a full set of...

My Dance With The Princess - A Tragic Love Story

"What the f*** is this thing? It's so ugly, it's worse than the pictures. This is stupid, this is going to bite you in the ass... don't say I didn't warn you..." - My Wife

My Dance With The Princess - A Tragic Love Story

Last Tuesday I said goodbye and good riddance to The Princess. I stripped her of parts and put her on a trailer for a visit to Valley Hybrids where she will be converted back to a factory H55F/Spit Case configuration with a brand new transmission, from there she will head back to her adopted...

Probably a dumb 24V stereo question...

I have a gnarly stereo from my FJ62 that I want to put in my BJ74. I’m gonna grab a couple of step down converters to run the small stuff, no problem there. I’m just wondering if there is any way to step down my amplifier. I have an awesome compact class D MB Quart 740 watt amp that fits...

4x4 Weirdness - no drive to front wheels with transfer engaging properly

Years ago I bought an FJ40 that had been basically unused for years. I had the same thing you're describing. Turns out both hubs were kinda dried out and sticking. I pulled them apart, and got everything properly lubed and the problem went away.

    Transfer case options

I *think* the stock tires on this truck were a 235/75/15, which around a 30" tire. I'm not 100% sure maybe someone can chime in.. Mine is a JDM BJ74 that had factory 15s (one is still with the spare so I know for sure).

    Transfer case options

If it were me I’d say 4:1 having wheeled some crazy s***. For me the more gearing the better.

    Transfer case options

I had the Toybox, and even Marlin himself couldn’t get the thing to hold together I’d forgo a little inconvenience for a rock solid drivetrain, especially after my last fiasco. My advice is this, speaking from experience: of you can’t do it yourself (even if you plan on having a shop do it)...

You don’t need coils to party there’s nothing wrong with leaf springs 😬

    Transfer case options

You wouldn't be a guinea pig per se, I know of a couple of guys running it with an H55F and they're really happy. It all depends on what your priorities are. One thing I discovered on my last rig with an H55F was that it's not really an optimal gear spread for a highway machine, I don't think...

    Transfer case options

I have the same basic truck as you with the same plans :) yaaaay!!!!! I’m currently sitting on 33s as well. Runs great on the street! I recently sold my Cummins powered FJ62 running an H55F/Marlin Toybox/split case. The gearing. Was. Awesome. I mean straight up hold-my-beer climb anything, put...

best tire size for 2.5 lift

I'm planning a build soon with a 2.5" kit and 35s. It'll require some trimming and proper bump stop work, so if you're into all that then it should work. I can't stand an underperforming truck so I'd call gears on a 35" tire a must, otherwise you're kinda turning your nice truck into a turd...
