    Ammonia Smell?

You know, I have experienced something similar on our Sequoia... with the back window rolled down. Before the engine was fully warmed-up, and then during mid-heavy acceleration, some ammonia-like exhaust smell would get sucked into the cabin. I say ammonia-like because it is a faint odor, but is...

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

Thinking about this come more... obviously the skid control ECU collects a lot of data to manage the ABS, VSC, and TRAC functions (vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle position, brake pressure, deceleration, yaw, steering wheel position, etc.) Paul, do you know if the stop light switch actually...

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

Yep, mine's a 10/1999 production date. All the wiring connectors are identical to the unit that it replaced. Knock on wood, but I drove another 16 miles of stop and go, and no lights have returned.

Yes, brand new whole master cylinder assembly, P/N: 47050-60041 Brake Booster Assy, W/Master Cylinder W(VSC),PNC 89637D=TYPE A (Note, I didn't order it from ToyotaPartsDeal.com, I ordered it from my local dealer for about $100 more plus tax, free overnight delivery... it helps to be close to...

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

I did have the battery disconnected, so hopefully no chance of shorted-out components or blown fuses. However, I did not inspect the fuses yet. I will do so. Here's an update: After my lunchtime diagnostics, during which I had to unplug the skid control ECU to check the specs on the brake...

Hi, Classy: Yes, it's frustrating... mainly because of the very random nature of it! I appreciate that generous offer! Part number is 89540-60160 (Computer Assy, Skid Control W(VSC)). Please see my update in response to Paul's post below. Thanks!

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

Update... with additional diagnostics. On my lunch hour, I ran some additional diagnostics. My thoughts were going to something with the brake light switch, since the FSM diagnostics have the brake light switch and circuit as part of this. Regarding my question above, I also found that this is...

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

Okay, so I looked up the Diagnostic Procedure for that DTC in the FSM. It states: "1 Check output value of the master cylinder pressure sensor. PREPARATION: (a) Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3. (b) Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester main switch ON. (c) Select the...

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

Hey Paul (and any other brake gurus): TL;DR - I got the brand new MC assembly in in Saturday, and now I am getting ABS system DTC codes C1223 "ABS Control System Malfunction" and C1246 "Master Cylinder Pressure Sensor". So, I received the brand new, complete MC assembly on Friday and got it...

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

Pulled the MC last night and, since it was my second time doing this, it took me about 40 minutes from start to finish. I didn’t have time to fully disassemble the unit, but I did pull the motor off and open her up… Brushes are fully worn down, with lots of carbon dust in the motor housing...

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

It’s true… the warning beep and Christmas tree are unmistakable and should never be ignored. But, if the pump motor stops working—depending on how much pressure is left in the accumulator—you have one to four applications of the brakes before that accumulated pressure is exhausted. So, you’re...

    Brakes ...... Overdue write-up.

Personally, if I was buying a new-to-me 100, or if I was due for a brake flush (or replacing a caliper or anything else that required bleeding the brakes), I would pull the MC, remove and open the motor, and inspect the commutator and brush wear (along with condition of the motor's power wire)...

Paul (@2001LC): great master thread on this issue. I am interested to see that you are now personally replacing the entire MC assembly on the vehicles on which you're working. Just this past Monday (eclipse day!), as we were preparing to head down to southern Missouri to watch the eclipse, I...

A/C not working... Questions for DIY diagnostics

Hello, all: With the weather getting warmer and more humid, I have noticed that my A/C is no longer turning on, as in, the compressor doesn't engage when switched on. It stopped working sometime over the winter, and was working last fall. I am assuming that the refrigerant volume/pressure is...

    Alternator replacement in 2023.

I put a Toyota reman in my truck two years ago, after the O'Reilly reman that I replaced my original alternator with crapped out after 6 months (O'Reilly made good on it and gave me a full refund). At the time, I took some crap from some on this board for paying "more for the Toyota sticker" vs...
