    Mass Air Flow Meter

The MAF on my crown vic looked like someone sprayed it with primer. That is, it was coated with a gray residue. As far as what cleaner to use I was told not to use break or choke cleaner. Electrical contact cleaner apprarently leaves no residue that would tend to attract dirt. CrownVic.net is...

    Mass Air Flow Meter

I have a crown victoria with 212k miles that started running rough and pinging at higher loads. I thought the engine was just shot. I learned at a website for CV's that if the MAF gets dirty it can through off your fuel injection system. The MAF tells the computer how much air is entering the...

A/C recharge - need some QUICK answers....

By the way, how did you charge it? What sort of refrigerant does it take? I need to do this too.

Dexron III / Mercon ATF by Chevron OK?

I'm sure I used 4 quarts or more. I took the return hose off the reservoir and put a little metal tube in it then clamped a clear plastic hose onto the tube. I put a foam ear plug in the reservoir nipple. When you refill the reservoir and jog the engine you can see the fluid go through the clear...

Dexron III / Mercon ATF by Chevron OK?

I used the COSTCO Dexron III in my 95 80. When I bought it at 127KMi the trans fluid was dirty, and had a little bit of a yellow color. I did a drain and fill of two cases of the DIII and it cleaned up. After that I heard that trasmission fluid has such a high detergent level (i.e.holds dirt in...

Spark Plugs Gap And Valve Adjustment

I think changing plug wires and plugs can have a payback in this era of $2+ gas. I bought my 95 with 125K and replaced both and advanced the timing. I repalced the wires (NGK seem good (nice blue)), and put in bosch 4 prong plugs (no gaping to be done). I also replaced the cap and rotor and got...

    Tranny fluid capcity numbers

I just bought two cases of Dexron III at Costco and drained and refilled until I used the two cases. One little screw-up was there is a metal gasket under the drain plug, and I found it in the bottom of the catch pan after I was finished. It turns out the plug doesn't need the gasket to seal...

How Low Should Steering Knuckle Grease Get?

I bought a 95 a few months ago and got enthusiastic about greasing the knuckles. I thought it was just a big ball and socket joint and if I greased it right grease should come out of the joint. I got the proper fittings and pumped a tube into the knuckle. I can remember lying under the truck...

    just completed birfield repack

Congratulations on the birf repack Vince. I disassembled my birfields but didn't think it was necessary, and in fact they can be reassembled wrong so it adds some risk to the job. There is one other thing that can be done though, and that is to switch the birfields (right to left etc). There is...

    Can't Service Birfields ?????

I'm glad we finally talking through and resolving our birfield issues. I have one: As a result of the ball moving and transmitting torque a little ridge is worn into the birf itself and I think Robbie said that is where the noise comes from. Can't we just switch our birfs (like from starboard...

    95 Spark Advance

I put new plugs and plug wires (NGK) in my LC last weekend and it make it run smoother. I put the bosh four prong plugs in it because they don't need gaping ( I tend to think gaping plugs a set of plugs uniformly is impossible, resulting in six cylinders running on different curves. This gives...

    Bad Birfield?

Toward the end of the knuckle job you bolt the spindle onto the knuckle housing, put on the hub, and then put the splined cap on the end of the propeller shaft (don't know name but recall the cone washers). Then you pull the shaft out all the way and put a snap ring on the shaft just outside of...

    Steering Spindle

I installed the new spindle in my 95 and it seems to work fine. The new variety has a bearing in it rather than just the bushing. It runs fine and a minor clunk I had on occasion seems to have has gone away. It took about 2 hours to change it out.

    Steering Spindle

I could see galling type marks where the shaft had grabed the bushing and spun it. The inner seal leaked and 90w apparently washed the grease out of the knuckle. Now I look at the knuckes for signs of oil leakage. I'll put the bearing spindle in and let you know how it went.
