Procedure for replacing 100 series(98 and up) starter contacts

Another Trick for Removing Starter - Plank After spending an hour trying to get a socket on the driver’s side starter bolt and still coming up empty handed, I decided there must be a better way to improve my position to reach the starter instead of leaning in from the front or sides. I laid...

    Belt area noise

That's a good sign since the crank pulley is driving the timing belt, cam shaft gears, water pump, timing belt tensioner pulley, and timing belt idlers pulleys; all expensive/time consuming to replace. Test the AC compressor and clutch by running the engine with and without the AC on. jp

There is no transmission filter; only a strainer that doesn't need to be replaced. jp

    How Miles on your 100

2000 with 164k. Did the timing belt at 112k (it still looked new) but not the water pump. Still running on the original water pump. I do change the anti-freeze (Toyota red) every 50k. This truck is a well engineered tank! jp

    Oil & Filter

I run the Mobil M1-209 oil filter. The chart calls for an M1-102 but the 209 is larger (more filter area), cost the same, and fits fine. The Mobil 1 tech line says the filter media and construction are the same so there are no warranty issues. I run Castrol 5W30 organic oil and change every...

    Timing Belt/Water Pump $550 Installed?

When you take it in, request the old t-belt and water pump be bagged-up and left in the vehicle. That way, you have some guarantee the parts were replaced and you can report back on the condition of the t-belt and w-pump.

Why I don't let dealships work on my rigs

All techs use their skill set and experience to beat the flat rate with the least amount of effort, not to do a first class job. It always comes down to the money; the faster they produce, the more they make. Welcome to the real world.

Brake booster, etc. 1998 LC $2,300 part, tax, labor????

The question is "does the dealer know exactly what needs to be replaced or is everything being replaced at your expense just to be sure the problem is corrected the first time". As you can see on the Toyota parts web site, individual modules for the braking system are available for less money...

    Help! My 100 is dead.

If you don't want to wait for the dealer to open on Monday, pull the battery and take it to one of the chain autopart stores. They'll recharge it and test it for free. The battery is probably OK so you can bring it home with a full charge and re-install. My guess is you'll find the head...

    2000 Land Cruiser

Toyota recommends timing belt replacement at 90,000 miles. The cost to have it done ranges from aprroximately $500 to $1,000. DIY is approximately 16 hours + $50 for the belt. Some replace the water pump at the same time along with all the front oil seals. A vehicle that comes with...

    Adding A Compass

There is no mention of a compass anywhere in my 2000 LC owner's manual. The vehicle was manufactured in 12/99. I checked a Toyota parts site and the inside mirror for a 98-00 is only available without a compass for $78.48 retail, $62.78 wholesale (online). The inside mirror for a 01-02 is...

    Adding A Compass

It’s sad the 2000 LC doesn’t come with a compass. I’m interested in a good after market compass and possible mounting locations.
