Yes, I got that back in post#7. I got a chisel under the nose cone and eased it up and off. Gasket stayed intact, flipped the clutch sleeve collar added a little more gasket sealant and it's all great now.
Am I correct in assuming I can remove the 4 bolt rectangular shifter shaft assembly and then the 5 bolts that hold the nose cone and remove the cone without getting into the rear output side? I have the 5 bolts out and the nose cone is being...
OK, I did a mockup of the gear, bearings and spacers and yes it takes 2 spacers, two bearings and one gear so that part lays out just fine. Next I studied the clutch sleeve photo in the FSM and the Haynes with my new prescription glasses on and...
And the plot thickens..... The T case is essentially completed and ready to install onto the transmission, I understand this involves placing gears through the aperature on the side with one hand while sliding it onto the splined output shaft...
I should have been able to see that from the lever and bolt laying alongside it but once a guy is in his seventies it can be hard to remember how it all went together. Good thing I bought my '79 FSM forty years ago. I put another layer of tape on...
Thanks Charlie! Of course that makes sense and it was pretty easy to see with a flashlight that pushing the round plunger rod inwards slides the clutch sleeve on the shaft to the rear, which should normally disengage front drive. But in my case...
Finally finishing up my transfer case (79 fj 55) rebuild and this afternoon I torqued the front drive output shaft to 115 lbs as stated in the FSM, then I installed the retainer with speedo drive with the same two shims I had removed. Next step...
Lots of good info here, but really I was only wanting to know if I could hang the one piece '79 case on the back of a FJ 60's four speed in case the output splines were badly worn when Ipull the existing worn out case off for the swap. In my shed...
When I pull my growly transfer case off it's original '79 transmission I suspect it may have the typical hard ware on the output splines like I saw on the last 4 speed I had. If so, I have a four speed with much lower miles, but it is an '82-'84...
It used to be a thing. The Toyota Stout pickup in the mid 1960s had a 4 on the tree as did some mercedes diesels of the same era. In the 80s we couldn't get rid of that column shifter fast enough and have a floor shift like a real truck. Only...
Just finishing up a transfer case rebuild. I rebuilt a '78 case from an Fj55 to swap into my '79 Fj55. My '79 has 3.70 gears and the '78 had 4.11. The '79 has 33" tires. My question is should I use the speedo gears from the '78 or the '79? I...
Not sure what 'good shape' means to you. It's kinda like 'rusty'. I figure I'll bring my impact into that part of my woods and unscrew them. I do understand that forums have rules about the regular forum topics and the want ads. I think we should...
While many of you have seen these photos before, they are pertinent to this thread and some of the newer guys may not have seen them. I'm now thinking this was more like 1990 as the smallest kid was born in January of '88 and I remember the kids...
I think I'll put off buying a Chinese tub until the factory that builds these Champion radiators (that sell on amazon for 200 bucks) starts offering a tub. The welds on the above tub look like some of the stuff I did an hour after I unboxed my...
Believe me, you are gonna have a blast, and the people you will meet because of the 55 will be icing on the cake. Took my family of five for a month long trip in our '79 55, towing a 15' travel trailer in 1994. Disneyland, the the Southwestern...
From memory there was something like this in the SOR catalogue back in the day. "Stand in front of the vehicle where you can see the center arrm and pivot. Have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth. If you see up and down movement on...
Thanks so much for making this video. It was very informative and the process is now well documented. If a picture (like in the FSM) is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million. Will be looking for you two on oscar night.
I have arrived at my simplest method of extracting that bearing. It's back to the carraige bolt method I use for pilot bearings, but with a twist.
1) Using a dental pick, ice pick, small screwdriver, your choice. Pry the cage and needles...
If those bars were 3/4"-1" long they would would lock into the empty race once the needles and cage were easily disposed of. And I bet a slide hammer would make light work of it once you got a good purchase on that top lip of the race. I can...
Sheesh, this is a very nice build. I see you are now hurtling headlong toward a shake-down road trip. When you get to Orcas, find Pickett's Lane and wind your way up Mt. Pickett. I'm at the 'Men Working' sign about a half mile up. If you hear...
