    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Yes, it is good to have her running again. I've got to tune her up next...she's been sitting for about 8 months due to my work obligations, so I'm looking forward to smoothing out her idle and doing some cruising again. Hey, post a pic of your cruiser when you get a chance. Ken

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Thanks PH.. no danger on quitting the day job to become an electrician, although my knowledge base has been advanced somewhat. Hey, enjoy the Big Island (hopefully it's a pleasure trip) I'm over there for work from time to time and it is worth the time and effort to get there.

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

By the light of the early dawn here in Honolulu I was able to secure another ballast resistor. I reconnected and: we have ignition! She's purring like a champ. PinHead, you nailed it. What threw my off track early was when I bypassed the resistor earlier with the black/yellow wire feeding...

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Arrgghh.... I went to our local Checker Auto (no NAPA nearby) and paid $10 bucks for a resistor. It certainly was not stock, but they had it listed as the compatible resistor for my 40. It did not exactly mate up with my set up, but close enough to make connections for diagnosis purposes. I...

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Yes, PinHead, my friend... you did mention the ballast resistor was bad on January 19 at 5:23 a.m. GMT. It is worth noting that in the same post you stated that if I wanted to drive to NAPA I could connect the black/yellow wire to the positive side of the coil and "drive" there. I guess my...

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Sorry Pinhead, my understanding had been were discussing the positive terminal on the coil not getting power. I ran the black/yellow wire from Point 2 on Vicm photo (which shows power with the key on) to the positive terminal of the coil per your suggestion. The positive terminal then showed...

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Sorry Jim, I suppose what wasn't clear was the fact that I did that when Pinhead suggested it. Hey, when you and Pinhead talk, I listen. ;) I also ran a wire directly from the positive terminal on the battery. Interestingly, when I ran the wire from the resistor to the coil it would not...

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Update: Well, I talked my trusty assistant (wife) into clamboring into my lifted 40 and cranking it while I did some test light work. I've got power to the positive side of the coil while the truck is cranking, but not while the key is "on". The truck will run with the key in the "start"...

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

I'll post a pic later...gotta go to work. But my set up is points, not electronic. Not sure what a semi-electronic ignition is...?

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

scduboy: Does the engine keep running while in start? (I can appreciate the weather angle, I'm in Honolulu ;)

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Pinhead: I quit fooling around, put a tester light on the positive terminal side of the coil (with key on) and got nothing. I got a power at the positive terminal of the resistor on top of the coil, but nothing on the negative side which leads directly to the positive side of the coil. Vicm...

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

Thanks PinHead. Yeah, I know my coil is ok, I was just interested in the specs to see if it's losing anything. It is the original coil. This cruiser never ceases to amaze me. 33 years old, pretty much all original stuff on it, and until this as reliable as my 4Runner or Tacoma. Couple...

    FJ40 Ignition Issue

I stuck on Ohm meter on the coil. On the primary my reading is 1.8. On the secondary my reading is 11,700. My LC repair manual does not have the specs, but in a general sense, these are within a normal range. If one of you guys has coil specs for a '76 coil, please feel free to weigh in...
