Excellent info, thanks! That explains why they sound like they do. Just not sure if the frame rails or accessories on a FJ40 will allow them to fit. There are dozens of off the shelf versions on Jegs. Was hoping somebody had already tried it.

Replaced the entire fuel system and doing surface rust removal inside the tub.

How does the other side look? That's where mine rusted out. ouch... might have to try my hand at metal forming and bring mine back from the dead at $350 lol

Looking for a complete 4 speed transfer case for a friend. I'm in Alabama (near Birmingham) and we found one local but they want $1,000 for it. Poor guy is 4 shadetree mechanics and several years into rehabbing his FJ40. We have a good 4 speed transmission and the proper bell housing. Parts...

Went and looked at all the parts yesterday. We have the 4 speed tranny and correct bellhousing and thats about all. At this point I think we would be better off buying a 4 speed transfer case because most of the 3 speed is in a 5 gallon bucket and parts are missing. Thanks to all for your help...
