Why I love this site...
Guys,
Thanks for all the advice - that's what makes us truly fanatics about these amazing machines. I have options now...
will post some pics tomorrow for those that asked...

Well... today is a sad day for me. I've had to come to the realization that my '88 FJ62 has reached a level of impracticality I can't afford any longer.
She is in great condition - had a tranny rebuild in 2010 - only a few thousand miles since. But she needs a new/rebuilt transfer case now...
Symptoms: whining sound, not going past 1st or 2nd gear, falling out of gear.
What I did: checked tranny fluid - it was low but clean. Pretty sure I have a leak. I let it sit overnight and rechecked - bone dry. I started adding fluid while the engine was running. I'm not sure how much it...
Interesting - my squealing is heat related. My A/C works great until it gets to about 95 degrees and higher outside (when you really need A/C). Come July and August, I basically have A/C for only the first few minutes of driving.
Wonder if that assembly is my problem also?

Thanks for the contact info - I'll definitely give them a call. I know it needs to be replaced - just curious why the outside temp affected the compressor so much.

Can someone please explain to me why an A/C compressor works fine until it gets over 90 degrees outside? When you need it most, it starts making racket and comes close to locking up. Just don't understand the mechanics of it...
My mechanic knew a AAMCO guy that had done a few FJ62's before. OEM from Charlotte, I think. Expensive though, but worth it for me because it's a daily driver. I can find out who the manufacturer is and send it to you if you need one.
Good stuff - I have this same problem. I always felt like it was getting a grocery cart with one bad wheel that occasionally rattles. Sometimes it will start when I hit a seam in the road (lots of bridges here). But it hasn't happened since the new tranny went in.
