I prefer to put the bearing with the closed end out (stamped marking out). The FSM doesn’t indicate any preference, which makes sense since the rear bearings are not tapered or separate from the race - so, you can put them in either way.
I find that mineral spirits work great. Pour into a good spray bottle, spray the area, let it sit for a few moments, spray again and then use a small wire brush (or use your wife’s toothbrush). 😜
First, check the classified section daily; there are many people parting out 60’s.
Once you get the smog parts, then pay a fellow cruiser to help you install it.
