    This is what I'm looking at, pre 9/72 or whatever. The central dark part spins with the cable. The needle is connected to the silver piece just to the outside of that. And yes the piece connected to the needle is free.

    3 speed swap for daily drive

    I am also a new owner of a '71. I am suprised at how high 1st gear is. Takes a lot of revs to get moving. I would be afraid changing to 3.70 would make the low end even worse. Does anyone have experience with the 3 speed/3.70 combo?
