As far as I've understood it is after 1983 The only real differences are whether the trans. came from behind a carbed/efi truck, and if the vehicle had ADD or not (1990 or later and not all trucks had it). You will want to make sure that you get a trans that is top shift if yours it, or vice versa.
Maybe a grenaded ring and pinion in the front? I would get on soft ground and lock the hubs in and try to drive it in 2wd to see if there is anybinding going on up front with just locked hubs. It'll become obvious very fast.
