Couple of members asked me to post up my conversion to a 3FE in my FJ40. I have more pictures that I will post when I figure out how to get a decent resize from a kodak disposable I used at the beginning.

I am starting with a little history, currently I am running the new wiring harness (Centek). Will update with progress as it occurs.

Hope this is helpful for everyone that is considering this conversion.

Parts:
1973 - FJ40
1976 - FJ40
1978 -FJ40
1988 - Fj62 -3FE Engine
New wiring harness - Centek
ECU
Main EFI Relay
EFI Relay
Mass Air Flow
Distributor
Coil/Ignitor
Front 3FE stock wiring loom
3FE stock down pipes
O2 Sensors - Bosch Universal

Little History -

I pull the body off the frame of the 78 and power washed and scraped getting it ready for a product called Chassis Saver. I did this as well on the 73 which was my original truck. However, I found the 78 and wanted the front disks and the Frame was in a lot better shape. So I sold the 73 and started over. Set back of 3 months.

Next step was to paint the Frame with Chassis Saver

I then mounted the 3FE on the Chassis
Tips - us the 3FE motor mounts in the front. You will have to enlarge the bolt holes a little to get the right fit. Took five minutes.
I used the 4 speed trany from the 78. The fly wheel, bellhousing all bolt to the 3FE with no problems. Use the rear motor mounts from the 2F.
You will need a pilot bearing for the 3FE, stock is auto transmission.

Everything mounts up like it was made for the 40. The 3FE is a little shorter height wise which will cause some problems with the fan shroud, and the brake booster.

Next I did a rear disk conversion to Monte Carlo calipers. TSM stainless brake lines and bracket from Proffitt.

I added a 4 inch lift and 2.5 inch Shackles. Running 33x12.5 Thornbirds.

Body is from the 76. Flipped it over cleaned and painted with Chassis Saver

With the tub on I decided to go ahead and strip the inside, clean and paint with truck bedliner so I can start running wire. Only a few rust spots on the outside of the truck and will not effect the inside of the tub.

Pulled the new Centek wiring harness - wiring was pretty hacked up on the other trucks, so I am hoping this is a little easier wiring in the 3FE components, basically where I am at now.

Here is a picture of the tab that you have to grind down about 1/4" to get the brake booster to fit. I am using the booster off the '78.

Mounted the ECU in the glove box and cut a hole in the back of the box to run the front wiring harness and the pig tail of the rear harness.

Mounted the Main EFI relay and the EFI relay to the firewall. Toyota uses two relays to control the fuel pump. One controls the other. I am wiring these as close to stock as I can. They will be controled by the ECU and the MAF sensor. Fuel pump that I bought is from Carter, haven't wired in yet but will update...

Thank you and keep it up! Mainly wiring info is what I'm gonna need help with if I go this route.. Too many trucks and too many options!

I am working on the wiring diagrams and trying to combine what I am doing with new harness. Hopefully that will help others.

I will keep posting

Erik,
I have a set of schematics (as bulits from my cruiser)for GM EFI that I put in an envelope with your name on it (about three years ago). If you want them get me your address and I'll mail them to you.
Fubar,
If you have trouble with your EFI wiring, holler and we'll get together and see if we can fix it. I have one conversion under my belt. Not much but better than nothing.

Address is in the front of trails! Or Just hold onto it.. I'm thining GM on the Fj40 and 3f in the Fj45 and I'll be done!

Craig - Thanks I will do. I am hoping to try and fire tonight.
