My alternator works just fine, but appears to be original to the truck and I am considering getting a spare for a long (750-mile) trip I am taking soon. They are NLA through Toyota; any recommended vendors that sell a good one? Or is it easily rebuilt by a shop? Mine is a late-1983 production 2H diesel HJ47.

A spare for a 750 mile trip? I wouldnt bother. Even if it died , your battery would probably get you home without using the headlights.

I just upgraded my HJ47 Alternator to an 80A internally regulated unit.. good upgrade, makes availability of replacements that much easier as well.
