ALMOST NEW FACTORY FLEET ENGINE - $14,000 (details below)
Imported by Marv Spector a dozen years ago, this immaculate motor has been stored in a warm/dry facility waiting for the right project. Both my rigs engines (3B and 3F) confirmed as "keepers" so this gem is now looking for a new home.

Engine is in a crate as shown below, stored at Torfab in Seattle area. Miles not known, but was represented to be from JDM 100 series, low miles, scrapped by Mr. Toyota at end of executive use period.

Perfect unit for 80 or 100 series with auto, or you can use a HDJ79 ECM to run with a 5 speed.

EBAY BIN price will be $14,000 if it doesn't sell on MUD. Open to reasonable cash offers from members, would prefer not to go to EBAY. Strongly suggest you consider using Torfab for the swap - he knows these "e" motors.

Another option if you don't like computers is to retro-fit a non-electronic IP and injectors to make it a 1HD-FT. Sell off the electronic bits on EBAY Australia to pay for the swap. A winner either way - high tech or no tech.

Tech review of 1HD-FT and 1HD-FTE differences attached with photos. PM me and let's find this thing a home.

Sad to see this part your humble world Ward.

GLWS.

Onur - You're not half as sad as I am. If I had a rig that needed a motor, it wouldn't be available. Not sure how I feel about it!!
:bounce::crybaby::bounce2:

I thought I was doing that when I bought the 73 but the motor is ok

Have reached my limit so to buy another project would require sale of my fire truck

wardharris: This looks very cool. PM to be sent.

Onur: should I pull the trigger for my 80?

Cheers and happy new year everyone.

It is pretty much as plug-and-play as you can get with an engine like the 1HD-FTE. That said, it is electronically controlled and there is little to no parts availability in the US market for this beyond fuel filter, air filter and oil filter. That said, it is a rock-solid engine, a quiet Toyota diesel and very refined. Very rare too in the US. It would be an awesome conversion if done correctly and with care.

I would investigate parts availability as well as technical documentation for the 1HD-FTE before diving in. I have access to the FSM for it if you do go this route as well as the EWD for a 105 vehicle that this would have been put in.

An awesome engine with lots of wires. The wires (harness, ecms, security components, etc.) need to come from foreign lands and be fully/correctly installed. "Plug 'n Play" is a big thing for this install.

I have a few customers ( very few ) with 1-HDFT(e) engines in their cruiser and we're installing one in another rig right now.
They're extremely smooth running, great power and milage.

GLWS Ward!!!!!

Hope it goes to a good home.

I'm new to this site but I see you are the go to for OEM parts. Where did the 105 have a 1hd fte? Come on now. It had a 1 Hz. Is that a Freudian slip or you really putting that on here? Parts are not hard to come by. Can you walk in the dealer no. Can you get parts yes. There is no special code needed. Or need to "know somebody".

while entry and mid-range models were the 105 powered by the 1FZ-FE I6 petrol, or 1HZ diesel engines.

The 4WD media in Australia were critical of Toyota’s decision to offer the acclaimed 1HD-FTE engine only in combination with IFS. Australian 4WD Monthly magazine said "We will never forgive Toyota for going independent at the front with the mighty 4.2 turbo-diesel".

As the OP stated buy this and remove the "e" from it and post up for sale in AUS. Make a friend who will help you get parts and you help him get stuff that's hard to get there. Everybody wins.

Go into your local Toyota dealership and try getting 1HD-FTE parts.

Please do and report back.

And yes, Freudian slip feedback loop to see if you would notice.

Is that why you missed where I said you can't walk in the stealer? I mean dealer. (Freudian slip). However parts are avaialable by order. It's not like they can't ORDER the parts for you. If someone came in your dealer are you going to say nope can't help you? The Toyota dealer in Windsor Ontario will get you anything you want with a smile. They also have a website. It's 2015. Just as easy as you can go on rock auto(others are available) or anyof these 3rd party sites for gm parts you can go on Alibaba or any of those sites and get parts. Can get parts from UAE in a week. It's not simple as walking in no. It's definitely not a concern worth not buying this motor.

These comments are not directed at @DetroitDiesel - just my 2 yen worth of experience and opinion :)

:worms: What Chris said. I am the OP and it was my 1HD-FTE. I owned it, I loved it, I sold it because for my part, I needed a functional, state of the art vehicle as daily driver, expedition and test vehicle (drivetrain and suspension research). Limited technical expertise and access to parts in North America caused me to pass it along to a more appropriate (patient) owner and vehicle (a 80 or 100 rather than my BJ73)

The 1HD-FTE may be the perfect Landcruiser power plant. It is a fawking awesome motor, but it was produced for a short period of time for selected markets to deal with emission and fuel economy mandates - until more modern engines could be developed and debugged. It has a relatively narrow basis for support by Toyota - scope (number of markets in which it was sold and number of years) and scale (volume of sales). It costs Toyota a bunch to manufacture or source parts inventory and to maintain info systems, documentation and support for trained parts specialists in its own facilities and the parts departments of its dealer partners.

Not everything is simple when you have an ECM configured for an automatic, intercooled "luxury" sedan with cruise control, security, air bags, etc. And when the ECM goes bad some day, good luck finding one at a price less than a decent 1HZ. The injector pump is a marvel and works flawlessly, but (again) at a price.

In order to install my former motor AND HAVE IT START / RUN, you have to have a OEM harness with matching key/security fob mated to the ECM. That's the kind of s***e that won't go well chatting with Rohit via Aliaba or Bob at the parts counter in Windsor.

God bless Onur and Dan and good luck if you want more than 25% off from a reputable source with any kind of expertise or service (oops, cross thread dementia).

PS
I thought about this alot when deciding to buy, install and ultimately, sell the motor. My conclusion (thanks, Voltaire) 1HD-FTE great, 5.3 litre Vortec crate motor good and i went for good....

Guess that depends on your definition of hard.

For some, it's not the finding or buying, the hard part comes paying off the credit cards used to purchase, by selling kids and/or spouses into slavery.

Had they put it in a simpler model, they'd have complained it was too complex and not rooted in Land Cruiser roots, yet they wanted leather, power, VSC, TRAC, all refinements of a much more expensive vehicle.

They sell entire drivetrains in Oz for a fraction of what Ward invested in this engine, what he asked in return.....and they'll even throw in the chassis.

Wanna know what parts friends in Australia want from the US, the only they can't get there?

FJC grab handles and side view mirrors with forward facing indicators.

Oh, and SmittyBuilt Beaver Steps.

There's nothing LC that we have to offer that's not available in abundance there.

Get it right, dood.

It's "slip, stitch, and a pass".

Where?

I can order a part that's stated to deliver in that timeframe, pay for the part, wait for that part, then be refunded that money 3-5 weeks after the estimated delivery has passed.

UAE is not a great bastion of diesel parts, anyway, for obvious reasons.

On the stealership thing:

Yeah, there are a few Mudders who represent parts counters at dealerships, that are punching a clock like most of America.

They're not the enemy.

There's one old man, whose statue sits on the production floor in Japan, an international treasure, and his legacy will be ingrained in the future of well maintained Cruisers across America.

Dood has the ability to rattle off part numbers, starting at the front bumper, and completely build a US 80 in his head, comprised of only ten digit numbers.

You're Cruiser has already sent him a message with a list of all that ails, so when you call, he already knows what is needed, all he needs is your credit card number.

When you see the pics, claiming the 80 makes chicks' panties get wet, it's the sweat from his brow that telepathically moistened.

We call him the Shaman.

Another much, much, much, much younger dood, I mean at his age, he should still be referred to as a kid, even, that's the Shaman's protege.

Insanely educated, to the point that PHD may have followed at some time in the near past (because he's a kid, I tell ya) that fell under the Shaman's trance, with the important responsibility to carry the proverbial torch and continue the deity-ish presence, for the good of Cruiser-kind.

If you can dream it, he can make the parts required happen, and only inflict a portion of the elder's abrasiveness on the idiocy of said dream.

No chicks panties moisten telepathically....or at all, at the moment, but a work in progress.

That's beno.

Both are treasured and revered, neither being compensated for the vast knowledge they've gained, anymore so than any other working stiff anywhere in America.

Not much point in taking out dealership aggression on either.
Pretty much everything I've said on this site has been taken out of context which means it's probably me. I understand everything you are saying. I have never purchased anything besides parts from a dealer and never had one complaint. I got the impression he was saying he can't get the parts. What he means in stock. If I pay and order he can get anything or should. All I was trying to say was don't let parts availability deter you from this engine. Price is between buyer and seller of course there are other options available in different price ranges with simple research but its a sale thread I don't like to say anything about price unless I'm buying it. I have only commented on a couple threads and the couple I did beno tried calling me out as being misinformed using his vast knowledge. He was wrong. I have no desire to have a who's right who's wrong I know this I know that with anybody. Just gain knowledge and resources for cruiser. As far as getting parts in the UAE or AUS yes those are options that add another layer of hassle to ownership but nothing that should completely stop you. There are creative ways. And when I said things in AUS you immediately took that as I meant cruiser parts. I said sell the parts to AUS to develop a friendship with someone so that you can get cruiser parts and they can get anything they want from here that is high demand low avail there. Bartering. I'm not trying to downgrade the dealer experience in any way. No agendas against dealers in any way. I actually said I know a dealer that would love to help but I don't promote anything or anybody. It's all good. I respect my elders and those more knowing.

I also said this would be a good buy despite slight inflation because by taking the "e" off you can sell parts that are in demand and develop a relationship that will help you with owning this motor. So it's a win for everybody. I was trying to say buy this and don't be deterred because creative options exist. I would only consider this if you are a 100 series owner anyways imo.

So you bought the motor for a BJ73 and put a 5.3 vortec in a Bj 73 instead? That must have a ton of power and reliability. Yes there are cheaper ways to get this motor and the ft I just wasn't trying to say hey man I can get x for way less than you are selling y on a sale thread. It's all good. I want to do this motor in a 100 with a manual. I understand the pros and cons. So what is the buyer putting it in?

No worries, like I said, my comments were general - not directed at you.

Yes, went with a LC9 crate motor. It cost me about the price of converting the 1HD-FTE into a 1HD-FT, which was one of the options we investigated.

I bought the motor to go in a FJ62 fire truck (has a 3F) but the truck was so sweet as is i decided I liked it as is. Then bought a 73 with a 3B that needed work, so started planning that build. Total cost (security harness matched to fob/ECM, location of intercooler, cost of exhaust, labor for install tied to matching wiring) added up to a point that I did not think it made sense. I was also not comfortable with access to parts and service expertise.

I doubt if you can get a clean, low mile 1HD-FTE landed in the US with new OEM components (a truly comparable package) for the original asking price. Used motors on a pallet from AUS or UK, with 150k kilometers, maybe. Cheaper motors yes, comparable motors, no. If you want one, Great Britain / Europe are great places to visit. Lower miles, lighter use than Australia, I am told. Good luck with the hunt and purchase.

TBD but likely a clean 80 series for expedition use (not mine).

Cheers.

Cheers, you did the right thing. I was just suggesting Europe heavily in another thread and got bashed like a drum. You have obviously researched and have skin in the game. Really truly as you said stock is better than swap. This motor is great if you get the whole truck really but that's whole different discussion. Somebody with a blank check will have a nice rig. I'm devising my plan to get a hdj100 later this year. Sounds like you're definitely a cruiserhead so cheers to that and safe adventures.

When I talk about parts availability keep in mind I live 3000 ft from Canada. So not everyone has that option. I can take my boat over have a fish dinner take a cab to the dealer and have my parts all in a trip to dinner. No crazy logistics. These parts would have to be ordered ahead of time.
