Been on the 80's form for about a year now. Just joining 3FE. 1997 40th addition with 130k. Purchased a year ago and been in progress. Changed Fluids, exhaust manifold gasket, added dual batteries, that is only only engine compartment work to date. Want to know some good options for getting her to pick up speed a little faster, just not sure where to start that gives me the most bang for the buck. Would also consider a swap to a 2UZ-FE, If anyone has experience with that......

Thanks, Will

Not sure this is the correct thread for this subject, but do not put a 3FE in your 1997. You will gain nothing.

Riley, it has a stock 3FE in it, I was asking if the 4.7 V8 such as in my Tundra was a viable swap?

Sorry I am probably on the wrong thread, it has a 1FZ-FE in it

'92 purchased 3 months ago. First Cruiser, stock except for 33x10 BFG AT's. Going through it slowly before I drop any money into it. Just started having a transmission shifting problem ...so advice is appreciated! 250k stock miles. I posted a full description of my issue a few moments ago.

I bought my first 3fe about 2 month ago. I love it. I have always loved the 80 series, just could never justify having one as my daily driver. I "settled" for a 100 series (see pic), but after 3 years of suffering through 14mpg daily; I had to sell her (still regret it).

So, I sell the 100 and buy a prius as my daily driver. You can laugh, but the difference in my gas bill was enough to put back $150 per month on my daughters college fund. :)

But what do you know, for my 30th birthday present, my wife let's me buy my dream car as my weekend rig, an old 80 (3FE).

1992, approx. 180k, mostly stock.

Fixes so far:
just fixed a major leak in my windshield wiper reservoir
took out old factory cd player (darn theft lock) and replaced with Clarion single DIN
New Battery
Changed all drive belts (started to squeal on my way out to a camping trip last week)

I love these things.

That's a nice, clean 80. Don't feel too bad about having the Prius...there are many days that I wish I had something more fuel efficient to drive for daily tasks.

Shifts, just occasionally doesn't want to shift between 2nd and 3rd. It'll just let the revs keep rising until I mess with the gas pedal or possibly move the shifter around. Lucas oil has seemed to help the most out of anything.

91 fj80 vx. locked front rear and center. double cv front shaft, arb bumper and fender guards. 4" ome lift kit with radius arms. 33" tires.

White 92 FJ80. First mod was tires due to dry rot. Sits on 33x12.5/R15 ATZ Mickeys on stock rims , zero rub. New birf's and OME 2.5 coming soon.

92 in Raleigh NC. 185,000 miles. Going strong and I love her. She has her issues, but who doesn't? If you have info on rebuilding front axle, stopping a sunroof leak, or are in Raleigh and just want to connect PM me.

My new to me 3fe. Already replaced the cracked radiator and changed out the wheels and tires.

Hello checking in here. I have a 91 & 92 FJ80 3FE. 92 now for parts. I bought 91 in 2002 with 232,000 from second owner college girl in Sacramento. Pretty sure she got it @ 180k from owner of restaurant in S.F. Living in Sacramento so most of the miles are highway.
-new radiator
-new odometer @ 291,000 dang! (Speedometer broke have to replace whole panel)
-brake booster. From 92
-power steering pump from 92
-new starter
-new thermostat & water pump x 2
-transmission filter & fluid
-fuel filter
-EFI main relay
-spark plugs,wires,dist.&rotor x 3
-bypass charcoal

- I am currently @ 334,010 miles

-power steering leaks cannot find the leak. Took it to dealer they said they can't find it & wanted $2200 to replace whole system! That was ten years ago I might have spent $220 on ATF since then. Can't justify that one. Looking for suggestions on that one please.

You may get more responses to the steering leak in the main section.
Can't find the leak? How does that work? Is it leaking or not?

Steam off the area, drive it around and start looking for the wet spot.

I've been on here for a while, but haven't really introduced myself. Got my 91 FJ80 with 153k a few months back and have been doing mostly PM stuff. Treating this as a bit of a restoration job for right now, as well as driving it as my DD. It came with Tacoma 16in rims and Goodyear SA 275/75s, and I will probably upgrade the front brakes with larger rotors when I break into the front axle later this month. I feel pretty damn lucky with this find as I actually kind of fell into owning this truck. My Nissan HB mini truck (which I owned for 11 years and lived to 265k) warped the head. A friend had found this, and when I took a look at it, I couldn't say no. Thanks to everyone for all the great info, it has already helped me immensely with my new project.

Hi everyone,

Like many others, I've been 'lurking' on IH8MUD for a long time before joining. What a fantastic resource this is!
Anyway, here's my 3FE; bone stock & likely to stay that way mostly. Found on eBay in June 2013 with less than a day left & one lonely bidder (likely the owner submitting his min price). I did a CARFAX & found nothing hokey there, the pics looked great so I pulled the trigger on it. Got it with my first bid & it was worth every bit of it. Had just over 200k when I got it. No service history. I baselined the fluids & undercoated it immediately & just put on a set of Grabber AT's (highly recommend these skins!), there's a birf rebuild in the near future with new shocks all round as well. LED bulbs done all round as well as John Deere headlight bulbs. Rear seats pulled with two kennels installed & wire racks over them for storage. Clearcoat on the hood was peeling so I used vinyl to cover it - then I got carried away & did the beltline. I'll stop now - promise!
I use it for hauling my vintage trailer as well as my hovercraft. Occasional off-roading but mostly dog carrying & toy hauling in & around Canada's Atlantic Provinces.
