1KZ Nightmare - Now Rebuild and Prevent and remove ECU

Well I have had a gutfull of 1KZ issues

here is the tale of wow

It appeared to start after my employee put the mighty green go anyway hangbag jungle wagon on its roof and back over escorting ATVS at 20kph - I still cannot understand how.

When it rolled the RADIATOR hoses were ripped out of the block.

When they fitted the new body 6 months later and started it it never ran right. Lacked power etc. Damage bill for the rebuild and fitting of bars and winch I got no change from $12,000rm

I did the Injector Pump and cleaned the injectors - no difference still ran like a 3 legged race horse.

The new body

Then Last November we put a new RADIATOR in as it was overheating a little and then a new AIR COND unit at the same time. Damage bill again $3,000rm

And then the new 35" sneakers and a NEW headgasket as it started using coolant - Discovered a cracked head 8 cracks so NEW head fitted. Dmage $5500rm and it was off to support the filming in JOHOR for Driven to Extreme for discovery channel. We took all my 3 jungle trucks RED, YELLOW and the now BLUE green truck. It ran terrible the whole 1000k trip. I drove the mighty YELLOW deathstar and the whole trip the 1KZ handbag could not even keep up at 110k and overheated and idled rough and smoked and missed at idle.

The filming of driven to extremes

Then it came home on 8 December and we parked it in the driveway until 28 Feb 2013 when I started it up and took it for a 500k drive - farking thing overheated at anything over 100k and used 60liters for 300k and then went almost back to 12l/100k on the way home.

Took it to the workshop - check injectors, check Compression and check anything else head torque etc.

BAD NEWS almost no compression - OFF with the HEAD and the DAMAGE was revealed 2 cracked pistons.

Now its getting a total rebuild $5,500RM an they Say injector pump gone again :( and a INTERCOOLER will be fitted.

After the engine rebuild it will be a repaint back to GREEN and we are serioulsy looking at selling it I have had a gutfull of the 1KZ nightmare give me the mighty 13B-T anyday.

8 March we went for a 3 day fishing trip and I took the 13B-T powered LJ77 RED truck and since it was was my birthday my friends drove me and 2 1KZ's tagged along (and a X3 beemer). I warned them do not PUSH your 1KZ engines they will not last the 13B-T just left them for dead every hill (especially the 20k hillclimb) leave it in 5th and JUST floor it it loved it the 1KZ's left FAR behind - overheating. ON the flat roads same soon as they reach 120k they start to get hot - the 13B-T haha 140k+ on the 35"s with the TURBO howling and my driver haha he ses my new diesel NISSAN NAVARA has nothing on the grunt this beast has.

You could always sell off the 1kz engine and go for another 13bt...sure thats a plan!!

Sorry to hear of your bad experiences with the 1KZ. Have a read through this thread on the NZ forums; it might help you with the heating problems you've had with 1KZ's. I think it's one of the best threads out there on improving the 1KZ: http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=30389

I came across it while I was looking for solutions to the 2LTE's heat issues.

Yeah I read that posting.

The 1KZ issues are well known and also strike here also

I'm just documenting my tail/tale of woe for people who own 1KZ's

Mine is hardly driven hard its been around 3 years and been everywhere in malaysia

The intercooler should help. I also did check the FAN and put more fluid into it. Thermostat and waterpump all checked

.

Was it kept running sometime after the rollover?

Almost all of the 1kz owners I know have had one or other combinational problems with there engines. Two persons had to have a whole new engine....and one of those had the new engine head go after only a few months.

So just counting 1+1+1+1+1 = 5 in the last year or so.

The cause of all the problem! Engine overheat causing pistons and head crack.:doh::doh::doh:

1kz is most beautififul and powerful engine. No look after engine then problem occur.

Not really true, when other engine families are doing just fine - such as the 1HZ, 1HD-T, 2H, 12H-T, 3B, 13B-T etc.

Hey it really sucks to hear about your problems you are haven. I have a kzj71 brought it with 80,000 kms now ten years later over 340,000 km no problems And I run a high state of tune. Must be just the luck of the draw I guess

I do not know I was welding up doors for the atv shed at the time I just drove out once they told me where it was and I should wait 3 weeks to calm down before i saw it

that is funny:D but, not your tale of woe.

Must be hot climate related issue with KZ's. Here in Mongolia KZ's are hailed as the most bulletproof of all small diesels. And we sometimes run very crappy diesel fuel in one of the harshest condition's of all.

Define no look after. Engine oil changed regularly, driven quietly a daily driver and a jungle truck.

Not looked after I do not believe it.

Crappy fuel will block injectors causing pistons to run hot one side and cool the other hence causing metal fatigue which will fail eventually.

Run engine after rolover and water pipe off is not taking care of engine. This why you so many problem.

Come my country and see no good fuel but no problem for 1kz.

We did not run engine with HOSEs off I said the hoses ripped off during the rollover. The vehicle was repaired and hoses reconnected, refilled and then started (I was not present when this occurred).

1kz are 'doing just fine'. Problem occur you people cannot fix and mistreat engine.

Is that you Captain Ramius? You really know how to make an impression........ :D
