I'm new to this forum and Land Cruisers. I picked up this 1969 FJ40 from the original owner. Well, technically not the original owner. He bought it when he was 71 years old and passed it on to his grandson. I got it from him. Pretty much all original. No major plans yet, but I do want to get the few missing parts back on it: stock exhaust, stock tail lights, and choke knob. Yeah, that's all that was missing. This thing is a time capsule. It has the original owners manual with a survey filled out by the buyer in '69. There's even a hand-written letter from the salesman to the buyer thanking him for fixing his teeth and included instructions on removing the emissions crap (which is still in there, so he never did it). I'll have to get pictures of this stuff. It even has the original dealer sticker on the back from Billings, Montana.

I have a few questions for the experts. Why doesn't it have locking front hubs? Are those stock hubcaps? Why do some of these have floor shift, but this one is column shift? The four wheel engages by pulling a knob. That's it. But I see some have floor shifters and locking hubs, so I'm confused.

Forgot one more question. I picked up a fel-pro intake/exhaust manifold gasket from Oreilly. I tore it all down then realized its the wrong gasket. I checked Napa and they have the wrong gasket too. What's the deal here? I know this thing was made in 6/68, titled a '69, but why can't I get the right gasket? I ended up just ordering one from SOR.com. Hopefully they send the right thing. Replacing this exhaust is harder than it should be.

I'm not an expert so can't help you with your questions but that is a sweet rig. Nice find.

Nice rig! When i clicked on the photo it brought up a porn site though, whats the story with that?

No way?? It's my pic that I put on Imagevenue.com. I marked it 'Family safe". Sorry if that happened, but it doesn't do that to me.

Happened once, tried it again and something popped up at the bottom of the screen.

No worries though.

I got a live-girl chat popup. Not porn per se, you should delete the link and just post the pic.

The rims don't look stock at all. They're too wide. Check the sticker for a dealer installed winch. Looks like a Belleview. The bumper is not stock, but might have been mounted along with the winch.

I'd ditch the winch, bumper, rims, hubcaps and tires for something more stock. Nice rig.

Fixed the picture.

The winch is a Warn 6000 dealer installed.

The guy told me the rims were original. Check out this page, I have the same wheels and hubcaps: Curbside Classic: 1965 Toyota FJ 40 Land Cruiser | The Truth About Cars

I want to get different tires. The guy was using this thing to plow snow for the past 20 years so he put these 31x10.50x15 snow tires w/studs. I want to get something like a 7.00x15 but those are hard to find. I'm open to suggestions. I am hoping to get to the 4x4 swamp meet in Puyallup, WA this weekend and find some tires.

the hubcaps are early OEM toyota and very desirable....so dont loose them :)

it probably has an OEM block off plate on the front axle...at least you dont have to worry about locking and unlocking the hub :)

your year was a column shift or optional floor shifter...alot of people convert to a floor shift....however its a gread deal of tinkering to get the column shift back to do a true resto....sooo....you are one step closer :)

also the winch (hard to see clearly) looks like an early warn Bellevue...there are several threads about them and manuals in the FAQ

Nice rig and welcome to MUD :)

That's a really nice Truck!

I think it looks fantastic just he way it is!... Except i'd have the headlight surround white to match the roof.

Oh and im interested to see what the experts say in answer to all your questions!

Floor shift was an option in 69 but most are column shift. You want the column shift, very cool and fun to drive and then three can sit up front. Not sure if those are stock hub caps for a 69 but for sure stock on earlier years. Very valuable, if in real good shape they can go for $500 and up on ebay. 4wd shifts by pulling the knob that uses a vacuum system to switch to and from 4wd. Very reliable setup. Will have another lever under the dash to go to high and low gears. This is an incredible rig to be this nice and this stock. Not sure on the rims cant tell from these photos, bumper is not stock that is for sure, need a lot more photos.

yep your right totally forgot about that

...there are a hand full of factory floor shift rigs here on mud as well....most others were converted later however...i would rather have the column shift

Really? Wait... so your saying that Floor shifts weren't "Standard" back when?
Was it just for a certain year or before a certain year?

Cos my 1964 appears to be a factory floor shift... :hmm:

cool

if it was me, I would leave it as original as possible

the easyest way to tell is by the hole in the tranny hump...if the hole for the shifter is a clean hole with capture nuts its from the factory as a floor shifter....if it looks like it was cut with a sawsall then it was changed over at some time.

this might be of use to somebody :)

these are the different covers for the tranny for a 1969

58206-60071 FJ40; COLUMN SHIFT
58206-60091 FJ40; COLUMN SHIFT, P.T.O.
58206-60112 FJ40; FLOOR SHIFT, P.T.O.
58206-60122 FJ40; FLOOR SHIFT
