The two sides interlock with each other so they won't come apart. The force alone pulling the two sides together will keep them for spreading apart.
 
Howdy! Been around for a long time. Notice the smooth mating surfaces are slightly curved, which helps draw the two halve together. Don't think they can carry a lot of torque, but I've never seen a spec on them. John

Howdy! They are pretty handy if you have a non-removable bolt that needs mid-point support, or a bolt with a damaged end. John
