Hello,
1994 Land Cruiser 4 door. Automatic.
My starter was acting up, so I hit it with a stick to make it work. Then, one day it would not stop. When I shut off ignition, it tried to start. I pulled the ignition fuse to stop it. Left it out to avoid electrical issues.
New starter will arrive this afternoon. I am under educated when it comes to repair.
Wondering:
1) Will the computer need to be reset once I put the new starter on?
2) Any other tips/ advice is greatly appreciated.

A sincere thanks to experienced folks willing to educate me.

Tailman, firstly you are in the wrong forum. You need to move this to the 80 Series Forum, that's where your LC brethren lives and will surely give you more responds to your question.

1. Just unhook the negative cable before you put in the new starter and you do not need to reset the computer. Is your brand new starter a Toyota Starter or aftermarket?

Rebuilt

The starter is a rebuilt by World Class/ Worldwide. Thought I would rebuild the one I take off, which is original.
Thanks for the help .... Yeah, realized I put it in the wrong place ... just par for the week!

moved it for ya!

classic issue, usually sticky contacts. Easy and inexpensive to replace. No need to replace the whole starter usually IIRC. (Note that some folks will put in a bigger starter if they do replace it. Not sure that's necessary in warmer climates.)
Be glad you didn't have a fire.
One of the reasons why I put a quick disconnect on the battery...

I don't see why the computer would have anything to do with this unless your battery / alternator acted up. I disconnect my battery all the time and never have any hiccups afterwards.

1. ECM will be fine but it will take a few start cycles to relearn the FI mapping after you disconnect the battery so don't get freaked when the first start has an erratic idle.

2. There are several good write-ups on the starter R&R. The FSM does a good job showing the steps. I think there is one write-up in the 80-Series FAQ and there is another on George's web site. Google "george cruiser starter" and see what you come up with.
