Have you tried an external epoxy patch? I haven't had to patch a seam, but my 40's tank was patched about 9 years ago with epoxy which seems to be holding up.
I am going to go buy a guys house tomorrow evening and look at a used tank for ya.

I've got a 82 (oct. 81) fj60 sitting behind my shop that I have been stealing parts off of. I think the tank is ok if you are still needing one.
