Ive been deciding between a quality stock rebuild (apparently the closest quality rebuilder is a whole state away), A jasper remanufactured (cant find any real reviews/experiences with the 2F), and A MAF Hi performance rebuild. I have searched here extensively and havent really found any amplifying info on the MAF, except for the fact many people hate Man a fre for their lack of customer service. I have read the article on Pirate 4x4 about that one guys bad experience with his secondhand maf engine.

It seems many people wont differentiate between MAF and the people (Martin Davidson?) that do the engine rebuilds. Martin Davidson, from what ive read, seems to be very familiar with the 2f and know what they are doing.
I have talked to former ARB rep Chris wood, and he has nothing but good things to say about his engine. I have also talked with Albert at man a fre (responds within 24 hours every time) and he says he has customers with over 150k on their rebuilds.

I know a machine shop can do the rebuild cheaper, and i understand i will have to run premium fuel. Im fine with that. Im just stuck between a rock and a hard place. I really want the ease of a dropin rebuilt hi po engine, but the couple bad reviews have me second guessing myself, however i do know that complaints are louder than praises on the internet- and ive really only read 2 complaints (on the engine).

Does anyone have any amplifying info on this engine, hard facts, or experiences that can help sway me one way or the other?

It IS Martin that does the rebuilds. Back in the day (20 years now) when I was learning the rebuild thing from my Uncle at All Cylinder Heads. Martin was our #1 competitor. He and my Uncle weren't exactly friends but they respected each other. Martin does great work, especially now.

I'm very happy with my MAF 2F in my '71. I had some help from LCWizard dropping it in over the span of the weekend. Broke it in (emergency situation spanning 30 miles off road) soon after. It's my third engine and worth it in my opinion. If I had the cash back then, it would have been my second engine.

No offense but I would steer clear of the Jasper. A- because they won't warranty it (I believe) unless a Jasper dealer does the installation , and B- because they kinda stink in my opinion.
I put one in my 94 minitruck and have nothing but valve train clammoring and it burns way to much oil.

Personally i'd go with someone that knows/loves the 2F .

We have the MAF HiPo in our 60, with around 25,000 miles on it. It has been the best purchase we have made to date. Notable power increase, mileage is better (17HWY, 13City) and they were great with tech support. We had a trusted import shop here drop it in, and MAF was there on the other end of the line as needed.
It sat for almost 2 years, run every two months or so to cycle fluids. It is now again my daily driver, and other than an exhaust leak, runs like it did years ago when we put it in. We still have all the emissions in place, btw, only thing missing is our AC system.
We tried having the original 2f rebuilt by a "reputable" shop, and a cracked block and legal fees later, we had enough. Wish we had gone MAF from the get go. Hope this helps.

Did you adjust the valves after the initial run-in period as they suggest?

How much oil is being consumed?

What type oil and what change intervals?

Yes, I adjusted the valves and it it has the same ticking as the day I drove it home.

I use Quaker State 10W30 at 3000 mile changes, always have with all my vehicles.

Highway driving had to check it every week as it would burn about a half quart.

Don't be offended if you work for Jasper bro, just my personal experience.

I was in the same boat with the MAF purchase a few months ago. Al at MAF was GREAT!! he answered all my questions and was honest about things. I ended up buying all my parts from them and had a local shop to the machine work and put in the same parts that MAF would put in their Hi-Performance engine.

i spent some big bucks on the whole process, but i did more than just drop in a motor. lots of other fixes along the way. I expected more power out of the "hi-perf" parts i put in. but, i only have 400 miles on it so far. hopefully things will get better with time.

nothing against Al and MAF, again, they were great, but i wish i would have saved the 1200 or so extra in "fancy" pistons, rings and RV cam, and just stayed with the stock yota parts. time will tell on the power gain. i may change my tune in a couple 1000 miles.

A 2F is a 2F, a bunch of Hi perf stuff and you still have a 2F. I'd do a stock rebuild, my 2c.

I don't work for Jasper but have installed several of their motors......

Only one had oil usage problems and it was a 22r. They replace the complete engine assy. and paid 54$ shop time book rate no questions ask. After they inspected the returned motor, found a scenario of bad valve guides; that could be your case as well being adjustments didn't solve the tick.....Is it too late to pitch a bitch or has time lapsed?

I had my motor rebuilt by Martin - Great guy ... I knew he was the one to do my motor, 'cuz when I went there the first time, about a dozen 2F blocks were lined up against the wall . I found out about him on a recommendation from Richard at K&H Imports (well-know Land cruiser repair specialists in the L.A. area) ...

I had him build my motor just like the hi-po MAF, but with normal compression pistons and a melling cam and new Toyo lifters. ~ $3300 That's including full balance and all head work.

There's only about two hours on the motor so far, but it's running well and very smooth.

Call him (818) 705-2441 I know he accepts motors by freight. I saw them come in when I was there (couple times a week for a month or two watching). He'll do whatever level of rebuild you want: short block, long block, or just machining and you assemble.

I didn't buy from MAF 'cuz they drive me nuts.

Martin also resurfaced and rebuilt my intake/ex combo.

Also, Mark Algazy (see the link in my sig line) will rebuild your motor - but don't know his policy on motor deliveries. Check out his website FAQ.

Wow, I wish I would of known this sooner. probably too late been about three or so years.
Maybe it affected some of the 22re's as well or do they use the same shortblock? I know all of my efi stuff went back on the engine.:hmm:

I ran three different vesions of the 2F. The stock one (minus smog with Weber and Cheapo header) and two other versions with two different cams. One HUGE mistake I made was using MAFs lifters that ended up being so soft that they mushroomed out and destroyed the two cams. Keep your Toyota lifters and get the bottom reground with about a .5 degree crown to promote rotation. In the end, the best running 2F I ever drove was a new, stock cam (all you can get from Toyota now is the 3F cam) the 38/38 Weber, a header and a distributor recurved by a local guy. In the end, none of these was even close to the power and gas mileage of the 350 I eventually put in but they cost just as much to build; more if you count all the stupidity caused by MAF's junk lifters.

You looking to drive it to a shop and pick it up later with a rebuilt engine or do you want to pull it yourself and take it somewhere?
