Hi

Just currently my BJ74 is not dropping into the last gear when im on the open road. So at 100km it is revving around 2 1/4 instead of 1 1/2.

Just wondering if this is bad bad news, or something that can be fixed easily through an auto gearbox specialist.

Any help would be appreciated.

did you have any work done on your cruiser shortly before this started happening?
have you been abusing or towing with your truck just before this happened?

does the fluid smell burnt?

is it red or brown in colour?

Can you manually shift through the gears and into top gear?

On my BJ74 with auto at 100kmh indicated the tach is 2200 rpm in 4th locked up. Seems about right to me - I couldn't imagine how sluggish it would be at 1500 rpm. Can anyone confirm what is correct?

2250 at 100km Cmon guys it supposed to be doing that, unless I missed something,( Rosco) you should have caught that! Wayne must be waking up, Graeme good Job!

Yeah well for some reason mine used to drop back to low revs. It would be a bit sluggish at 90kmhr but cruising at 100 or more. Currently the gears change 3 times. 2 1/4 revs may sound the norm, but it sounds like its revving more than it should, a bit like when you put the foot down to overtake and it drops back - thats what it sounds like.

If your not sure ,go to someone reputable (Ive used Baileys Auto Transmission in Balcatta and they are ok) and have it serviced whch includes a fluid change and adjustment for about $80. They will also tell you if it has a problem.

Apparently the lock down function doesn't work (thats what the pros said, not that I know what that means)

Could just be a spring or something.

Ask for a clarification, but its sounds like they mean the torque convertor is not locking up and its a bad spring causing it.
When you get to highway speed the convertor physically connects the engine to the drive so you are no longer using the hydrulic system in the transmission.

Download the free 84-90 body chassis manual and read up the auto transmission fault diagnosis. Im sure it will mention it.

My bet is the trans will have to come out,but they would have mentioned that already;)

1st to 2nd

2nd to 3rd

3rd to overdrive
