Everyone,

So here goes, I figure we plan the attack soon.. otherwise it's going to get crazy hot out in the high desert real fast. So since we bought the new place, i doubt Yosh and I will have time to go out in April. We'll be too busy. So .. i said what better than going out on my birthday? I couldnt think of a better place to be then camping out with some good friends! I wish i had a little bit earlier notice for you guys, but hey.. it's still a ways away to get prepared and ask for a day off.

The MOJAVE TRAIL - "From Indian Path to Modern 4WD Recreation Trail"

Schedule:

MEETING AT AVI CASINO (South of Laughlin) @ - 10am Friday March 23, 2007
Return Home - Sunday March 25, 2007
Run the Mojave trail in 3 days - 132 miles of dirt road
You will need enough fuel to drive 200 miles

What to bring:

Plenty of water. More than you ever think you'll need. I
recommend at least a gallon per person per day.
Plenty of Fuel. At least 1 spare tire. Spare belts, spare hoses.
First Aid kit, All the typical stuff you should always bring etc.

Rough Itenery:

Day 1) Friday

We will be heading out to AVI Hotel and Indian Casino on the Colorado River near Needles.
We will be topping off fuel at the AVI Hotel before we hit the trail head. (3 miles from Casino).
We will run the trail till we get tired and feel like we've made some progress for the day.
Im thinking we'll camp somewhere inbetween "Piute Creek" and "Rock Spring" the first night.

Day 2) Saturday

Get up and have a nice relaxing breafkast. Kind of take our time getting going today.
Run the trail to "Marl Springs" and camp there for the night. This is supposed to be a great area to camp.
(of course make stops along the way to view the sites)

Day 3) Sunday

Finish up the trail and head home. We will stop off at "Soda Springs" and the "Caves" and end at "Afton canyon" The Caves - http://www.shadowco.org/~cal/offroad/pics/Mojave_Road-06/Mike Rollins/slide262.html
In this last section there is a sand most of the trail. Anyone with a low powered motor or anyone with tranny problems is not advised and should head north to I-15. Hopefully we won't be home too late. I'd like to be home by 5-6pm.. so the last day we may get a early start on the trail.

Sidenotes:

While we our out on the trail, please stay clear of these plants - http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/jumping_cholla.htm
They will jump out at you and you can bleed and lose a ton of blood. Don't play anywhere near them!
Im researching where to find the lava tubes. Apparently they're not far off the trail. We may or may not hit these up.. Lava Tubes 1/4 mile hike - 2 miles off the trail

FYI - Im not a guide. Im not implying i know what the heck im doing. I just want to go run this on my birthday. If you want to go please come prepared! I am not responsible for you or your rig. I will help like anyone else would. Hell, i might be the one needing help... but Please, if you want to go , make sure you have the proper equipment and know how. Dont just bring a 6 pack of beer and a loaf of bread. Make sure your rig isn't falling apart just getting out of your driveway. This isnt a trail for a newbie. Just cause it's not a hard trail doesnt mean you cant get into trouble.

I also just want you guys to know i've never ran this trail and was hoping to pre-run it before anyone went with me (dont have the time to pre-run it this time). I have a guide book that tells me every turn on the trail. This is not a 'event'. This is a fun run.

So after all that is said.... WHO WANTS TO GO AND CELEBRATE!!!!!!!!! with a great trail run!!!!!  :grinpimp: :grinpimp:

I'm not sure. You kind of scared the crap out of me with your synopsis.

Are you really worried about the cholla? There are millions where I usually go wheeling and as long as you give them a little respect, you'll be OK. About a month and half ago my dog picked up one of the "balls" in her mouth. Luckily none of the spines penetrated.

And I would never head out for a weekend with only a 6 pack of beer:D

So after all of that is said, it sounds like a cool trip although I can't count myself in yet. And I would need to "borrow" a little of someones roof rack real estate for gas cans as I have no way of carrying extra gas yet.

Unfortunately, I can't make it Dave. I was scheduled for the Norcal Death Valley trip and had to back out of that for this same period. Two of my boy scouts have scheduled their Eagle Court of Honor for the 23rd and have asked me to present the award. I CAN NOT pass that up.

Dude, have you seen the gas station i have on my rack? I can sponsor your real estate. No problem on that one.

Pablo, i really have Mojave on the brain. I want to accomplish this run. I've been wanting to do it for a long time. I'll have to pass man..., but thank you very much for the great offer. I'll have to take a rain check.

So who wants to go!!????? Come awn guys!

Is this a trail we would need F/R lockers for? My rig is still unlocked.

I should be able to go. I'll have my full size ARB rack by then and should be able to pick up some gas cans. Wheres a good place to pick up cans like you have SOCALFJ?

Right on dude! It will be great to meet you.

Let me know if you need any help grabbing them.... i work not far from the store.

So far we have (3) 80 series rigs going!

I am very interested! I will have to work on getting Sunday off.

Stuck in Jury Duty for another week and that might blow any chances for time off.

I'll let you know.

Sounds good Boyd. It would be great if you could make it.

I just made reservations at AVI casino for Thursday night. If anyone's interested , the rooms are super cheap. From $34.00 and up. This way we'll be fresh and ready to run the trail the next day.

We are meeting all drivers at 12 pm Friday March 23rd at the Main Casino entrance parking lot. The trail head is minutes from the casino.

You really got me interested. I wonder if any parts of the trail would be a little too much for a stock rig? I wouldnt want to have to strap me through anywhere. Although thats part of the fun.. NO?

I sense an element of danger , . . I Like

Of Course there is safty in numbers right. :grinpimp:

Thanks for the heads up about those gas cans, SOCALFJ, They had like 20 in stock. I picked up a pair with a new spout there earlier today.

Yeah if I can swing my schedule I’m in :)

Little confused on your game plan? If you’re staying at the AVI Thursday night not departing Corona at 10am Friday like the 1st post says why the 12 pm meet/depart friday at the Casino entrance parking lot?

To me makes more sense to depart earlier on Friday for the trail, daylight is short anyway. My suggestions would be:

Camp the 1st night at Caruthers Canyon or Rock Springs if you want to stay right on the Trail. Caruthers is one of the most interesting areas off the trail there is and a great place to camp.

Marl Springs does have some nice views but its exposed to the wind and its will be a very long day on sunday with a lot of miles.

Camp the 2nd night at the rainy day mine site in a protected side canyon I know
http://www.socalcamping.com/000Mojave/rainyday.html

We could check out the lava tubes the next day and maybe have some night runs or hikes around the cinder cones or to the mine sites nearby. A bunch of side spur trails around so should be lots to explore.

THis would make the mileage on sunday shorter and you could get home at a resonable hour for those that have to work the next day and still allow some time to play in afton canyon which is always one of the highlights of the trail IMO.
