So went to my local Toyota dealer and ordered some parts. A distributor cap, rotor and ex. man gasket. So I went to install the cap and rotor tonight (previous ones have corrosion) and they don’t match. I’ll post some pics. It appears that the new dist. cap has a larger diameter and new rotor is a lot smaller and different female end.

New part #’s: dist. cap - 19101-45060
rotor - 19102-45150

What year 40? Post a pic of the distributor and part number if you can.
It’s a 1977 with a 2F in it. I have the whole ESN somewhere but I not at the vehicle at the moment. Ok I’ll post a pic of that when I get home. Do you have a lead on where the dist part # might be?

The Toyota part no. is below the vacuum advance/retard casting as shown below.

Don't confuse the Denso part no. with the Toyota part no. Toyota's number is on top, and most likely starts with "19100-xxxxx". This distributor part number will point to the appropriate Toyota parts.

It could also be a California spec 77 which had the smaller distributor cap. Assuming it's not sprayed over the OP can snap a pic of the sticker under the hood. If it's black with white lettering that's what we have here.

This is why the stealership here insists on having the VIN… even when you’re asking for disc brake parts for a ‘74. Great plan in theory if everything is still original, but not so much for many of our trucks.

I gave them what was on the reg, but couldn’t find the VIN plate anywhere. Dude has the doors off though so maybe it’s on there? I think I’m missing this sticker too that @iptman mentioned. I’ll check tonight when I’m home. Thanks guys.

@Streetiz81

It may not matter what the VIN is if the previous owner swapped out the distributor for a different year's model. Note that there are at least five different distributors that are interchangeable between 1960's to 1980 F and 2F engines.

Your best chance of determining the appropriate parts for your distributor is to take a picture of the part number label and post it here, or take a picture of the guts of the distributor with the cap and rotor removed.

It looks like a tag is partially worn off but here are some pictures. You’ll probably have to zoom in on the one with the tag. I couldn’t get a clear picture with my piece of crap iPhone. If it was you what would you do? Look for the cap and rotor for my distributor or get the original equipment distributor assuming this is not it?

Yes, small cap distributor.

To resolve your cap and rotor issues, here are the Toyota part numbers:

Rotor, 19102-61030 the same part as the F engine rotor, 6903 - 7501.
Distributor cap - 19101-41010, same part number as the F engine cap, 6903 - 7501.

The next step is to determine what part no. for the points, and whether there needs to be a condenser. Could you post a picture of your coil arrangement, and whether or not there is a condenser (small metal cylinder, with one wire coming out of one end.} I'd be looking to replace those hold-down screws, as well.

I made the same mistake and ordered a cap and rotor for a 76 last year. Apparently I can't remember timely that I swapped in a small cap dizzy with a Pertronix a decade ago. Live and learn, guess we both have parts we can't use. 😬

So you’re saying that those part numbers you gave me above just now are the ones I should ask for now? Is this distributor preferable to the one that is original equipment on this rig? The reason I ask is that money isn’t a deterrent so this guy just wants this done in the best way possible. Here are pictures of the coil

Wow, you've gone from "help me find the correct cap and rotor for my distributor" to "what's the best money can buy."

The picture of your coil shows an ignitor box on top of it, which is a Toyota advancement over a traditional points and coil arrangement.

I recommend you consult with mud member @4Cruisers , who has a good reputation here for providing refurbished and upgraded distributors.

That looks like a non-US distributor, probably 19100-61080. It's not a US F distributor (unless it's been modified) because the points are not the early points. Those points are Part Number 04191-41010, same as the 1/75 through 9/77 2F distributors. For a comparison of the two types of points in a small cap distributor check this out, my Post #26:

I've upgraded a few US market F distributors to use the same breaker plate found on the non-US distributors, with easier to adjust points.
