Love this thread. Happy to see a good shop like Matt’s working on it.

I’ll be moving on my 62 H55F swap this weekend. Finally. Still beating @Skniper though.
LFG!!

This is where we left off.

Oil pan and bellhousing tomorrow.

Looking good! Wish I had your skills, but also glad I don’t. No telling how many (more) “projects” I’d have. Between house stuff and LC stuff, I think I’m at my capacity…

I did forget to mention that when he pulled the wheels off to do the TREs, he showed me where the boots of the TREs were basically gone due to the wheels rubbing them when the tires turned. There was a thin spacer but it appeared those Mickey Thompson wheels had ZERO backspacing, which was the issue.

So I took him a set of FJ40 OEM wheels with some mud-terrains that I procured for my Old Blue Eyes FJ40 build a couple months back to use temporarily. They solved the issue but when I picked the rig up yesterday morning (basically driving it for the first time) WOW THOSE TIRES MADE ME ANGRY... EVERYTHING shook... the center console was banging around, my fillings in my teeth did the same... my first stop was at a "surplus" tire store for some FJ40 appropriately-sized A/Ts... I went with some 31" Toyo AT3s and it was a night and day difference... some before and afters...

I really like the little tires. What size did you go with?

Those are 31” Toyo ATs but I have some tall skinny 33” Geolander G003s that are going on some 70-series wheels when it gets back to Atlanta… I think the 33s with the H55 and the 10% overdrive gears with the 3FE and 4.11s gonna be a nice setup…

Gonna use the 31” Toyo’s on my FJ40

I’ve got 30” now and I need to get to a 31” at least. This truck will be stock suspension with Bilsteins and 4.11/h55f.

I expect it will be a little bit high on rpm but it should feel peppy.

@cruisermatt found lots of broken clips in the engine bay… and most of them are in except for the AFM… hopefully he’ll be able to eliminate some of the possible causes of the stumbling that happens intermittently with little rhyme or reason!

@cruisermatt is going to run through each electrical connection prior to changing over the connector and test it using the FSM procedure. Once it Passes, connector will get changed over to the new one…

So far AFM, Passed and replaced.

  • Intake has been removed to replace the fuel injector plugs (since clips were all broken)
  • While the Intake is out, Slave cylinder hard line is going in…
  • Matt is gonna drill the hole in the firewall for the clutch master
  • Pedal bucket is also going back in with the 3rd pedal
  • Hopefully the automatic boat anchor is finding it’s way OUT of the FJ62 today 🙏🏾
  • Also replacing some of the air intake pieces (why they’re removed at the moment)
  • Replacing the oil pan, gasket, hardware and rear main seal while we’re in there…

More updates from @cruisermatt
  • Some important parts came in next-day from Toyota, gotta love fast shipping
  • New Oil Pan - to replace the badly dented pan that was present
  • New 85-87 speedo cable because mine had some oil in it at the dash, so the internal cable seal was on the way out the door, also this corrects for the change in length for the H55 vs the A440f
  • New oil pan gasket, rear main, and all of the hardware
  • Also some small stuff - couple of dash screws and bushings for the brake pedal
  • Hoping to get the A440f dropped today!

More updates from @cruisermatt
  • Dropped the old oil pan that’s getting replaced and examined what he saw… PO had the engine rebuilt 4-5K miles ago, so expecting new parts.
  • Oil pump looks almost new 👍🏾 bearings looks almost new 👍🏾
  • Only “issue” is looks like engine builder didn’t do much cleaning on the oil pan… all good, it’s getting replaced with new OEM…
