Would love to know how it turned out, looks like it's gonna be awesome, and great job sourcing parts, that's no easy feat especially on the Hawaii I imagine.

What did you do to clean up your ashtray? The chrome surround on mine is flaking badly and is the only part of the dash other than the pad that's in rough shape.

There has been some progress, but a major house remodel and building of a big workshop and garage to work on the Fj40 has slowed the progress of the build. The top, side panels, front and rear doors have been removed to asses all of the rust repair that will be needed. I will try and get a good update post soon, but here’s a few photos~

Nice, will be great to have a bigger workshop for it. Good luck!

I wish there was more progress to report, but it has been pretty slow. More photoshoots with it then actual work done lately.

But there has been some work that’s been done as I’ve continued to collect needed parts. The front end has been removed and getting close to getting the radiator, radiator support and old busted engine out to get ready to put the donor engine in.

Also got a card rebuild kit, so going to attempt to remove and rebuild the OEM carburetor soon.

Thanks for the update. You don’t call, you don’t write…we worry. ;)

P.S. Very cool shoes.

I know, but I’ve been a little embarrassed about how slow the progress has been. Plus, 3 other ongoing Cruiser projects have also taken time away from the 40, but hoping for some real progress soon!!

Garage envy coming on strong here. Three Cruisers with their hoods up, where's the fourth?

The fourth is a new addition (80series), pics coming soon! My garage is becoming a home for lost, neglected and unwanted Cruisers!

I wonder what percentage of the TLC's on the island you have in your care. 🤔😁

Spotted this one the other day…

Was hoping to spot an alohajen cruiser during our trip To Oahu earlier this month, but we had to come back home after only a day.
Maybe next time.
I pretty much only stay around the North Shore, so best chances to spot them is around there. But only 2 of my 5 cruisers are running at the moment.

I am so far behind on updating the progress on my ‘75 Fj40. I’m going to try and catch up to where I’m at. It’s such a slow build that it is harder to remember to update it. But here are some progress photos and updates.

Got the old bad engine all disconnected and tagged/labeled to remove. Disconnected the drive shafts, electrical, Speedo and e brake since the engine is coming out with the trans and transfer case.

Then needed to separate the trans/transfer case from the old motor to swap to new one. Gave some minor cleanup to 15+ years of gunk before mating.

Had a little trouble with getting the transmission stabbed back into the donor engine, can’t imagine how much harder it would be with the engine in the truck!

Dropped the new donor engine and old trans/transfer case back in with some new motor mounts to replace the original destroyed ones.

Got everything on the motor bolted down with hoses and electrical hooked back up. Swapped over the old alternator, distributor, and starter. This donor engine came with the purchase of the 40 and had sat for 3 years in my garage. I believe the PO said it sat for 10 years in his garage, but he said he was certain it was good. It was free with the the purchase of the 40, so we just crossed our fingers and hoped it would start. We put fresh oil in the engine, removed the old spark plugs sprayed some fogging oil in each spark plug tube for a couple days, sprayed a little carb cleaner then sprayed some starting fluid, pulled the choke out and turned the key on a 40 that hadn’t been started in at least 15 years. Started almost instantly! Purred like a loud kitten with the exhaust not hooked up, but it idled and accelerated great! Didn’t run it too long since it wasn’t hooked up to the radiator/cooling system. Couldn’t believe how well it ran for sitting for so long.

Put in a new fan(original one was all cracked), water pump and new battery and then hooked up all of the cooling system.

Our son and his family live in Haleiwa. We made it to the point by turtle bay for a few hours and our Airbnb was a little south of that.
We had a family emergency back home so we left the next morning unfortunately.
Next time! I’m always on the lookout for anything Toyota over there 😉

Great progress Jen! I’m glad it’s running again. What does the list look like before you can drive it?

Eventually, my wife and I plan on moving to Oahu. (and yes... I'll be bringing my FJ along with me) As a matter of fact, we'll be there on the 21st of this month.

Didn’t come to Oahu this year. First trip, more than a couple days, in about three years. Saw some sights you may recognize…

And a couple pictures that of a bay on a different North Shore that you’ve likely seen on the news recently.

Shocked by what happened, glad I could help in a small way, and will be praying for the 51 year old French woman as she recovers.

After seeing what I saw that day, I’ll never quite look at warm beaches the same way again.
