I hope the leg in the hole was intentional!

Would have been a huge mess with running boards. Hate to backtrack but sometimes you gotta when exploring blindly.

65 miles in this am. In the Gila NF now.

New Mexico/Arizona Trip Report
So I need to fill in the gaps in this story, Jason and I planned to check out some of the spots I’d done with my EAF crew a few years back.

I’m not much for planning but I had an idea of where I wanted to start this one out. Last time we started in Roswell and it took a lot of pavement driving to get going. This trip I wanted to get to the closest public land within 1000 miles and start there. Originally I had Deer Park in the north part of Guadeloupe National Park booked but Jason got here first and realized it was not RTT camp friendly so I met them 3 miles north of there heading out.

We turned into the forest and I ducked us under a big Piñon pine to get out of the brutal winds.

They cooked some deer meat and I drank whiskey and we crashed on the first of many 7:00 nights to come

The spur we camped on was on the trail I thought looked good while playing with google maps and it put me near Cloudcroft where I knew there was unlimited camping in the big pines.

I really had no idea this day would produce the views that it did. This trail follows a ridge line that overlooks a desert with washed desert mountains beyond. Truly spectacular.

(Pardon the repost pics)

We got some pavement about 100 miles in Timberton but it was good pavement up through the National Forest to Cloudcroft . We filled up and I pulled up the weather and it was going to be in the teens with a little “wind” icon and 4” of snow.

Wow. No thanks.

As posted before we had time to catch near sunset in White Sands NP then we peeled out for Las Cruces for dinner

So the next day my plan was to run up to the top of Caballo Mountain then across Palomas Gap to TC then up the mountain and camp in the same place I did on the last trip just below Mt Withington fire tower. That all changed with the winds and temperatures forecasted but the first part of the plan was solid.

This was such a great trip in spite of it being a short 4 day trip for us Vs the miles we had to cover in that time… I’m ready to head back to New Mexico
