Gday all, just thought I’d flick up a couple pics of my project of the last 6 years, now mostly at a point I’m happy with. It’s come a long way as obvious!
Has anyone got pics of one of these old girls ‘period correct’ modified?
I’m aware mine is not. Any 90’s Pickup/Hilux would be interesting. Cheers!

OK, we need more pictures, and the story behind it.

Ok so here’s some pics from early on.
I bought it in 2015 for $1400 NZD with 188,000km, had been unregistered for 16 years being used on a station as a hack. Dream truck!
No rust due to the dry climate it lived in.
It got some new wheels pretty quick and a good cleanup.
Lots of $$ spent getting it road legal/re-certified.
1990 Toyota Hilux LN106 NZ new (assembled in-country).
In 2nd pic she had new Maxxis 31x10.5r15’s, couple new panels etc.
More to come…

Next lot of pics.
Bolted on a new ARB winch bar, Safari snorkel, and built a basic plywood canopy, as I’m keen on camping and found it perfect size to sleep in with room for gear as well. Went through various combinations of lights, found lightbar on the roof reflected too much and the HID spotties took too long to warm up. Never should have sold the high-output 20” bar!
Found the 6.5 ton shackles came in handy every now and then…

I love it! I'm in the middle of a similar build - an '80s Pickup restoration but with "period correct" mods. I mean, if you ignore the 7" touchscreen CarPlay head unit. ;)

Nice I’ll check it out! Haha gotta have some comfort somewhere…
After looking back on my mods I think I could have saved a lot of $ if I stuck to the basic period correct-ness, but I built it to suit what I do and it performs how I want!

About 3 years ago I had the engine rebuilt, as it was chewing through the oil and lacking power. After the run-in period I installed a CT20 turbo from a 2LTE surf, appropriate gauges, and a custom 3 inch turbo-back exhaust exiting behind the cab. This gave it enough grunt to run 33x12.5R15‘s (term grunt is used lightly here) so ran them on 15x9’s and a 2” OME lift kit.
Couple pics from a camping/4WD trip to test the turbo. My radio was off the whole way! :steer: (Yes clamped up the intake and got rid of the junk catchcan). It had to be certified for the modifications.
Last pic is the Hilux I learnt to drive in when I was about 6… my Dads. Check out the tyres…

love what you've done with the truck, especially this image. We are going to need some more pics of it's current form. unfortunately, here in the states, we never got the solid axle or diesel version of that truck. I like the low stance you have achieved with that frame. when we swap in a solid axle here on that generation, it has to be lifted pretty high to clear the (practically) straight front frame rails that came with the IFS.

Cheers! I’m posting my way through the build, will get there soon!
Yea I’ve heard about that issue, I guess you’d have to import them from Japan. Here in NZ we’re no longer allowed to import these vehicles due to age, so what we have in-country is all we have left! This particular ute was assembled in a city a couple hours from where I live, which is neat.
Yes, low stance, plenty of guys jacking them up for playing in riverbeds, but as soon as you get on the side of a hill you know about it…

I built a smaller deck to suit my needs and coated the frame with ‘BullyLiner’, a rubbery paint. Simple pine and checkplate finish.
After a rough 4wd trip in the West Coast bush, some barwork was in order.
To help prevent the 33’s grabbing the rear of the wheel arches, I repositioned the front axle approx 35mm forward on the spring saddles. An adjustable drag link and torque rod were required, extended brake lines too.

If anyone puts a turbo on one of these old girls I recommend positioning your oil drain where the diff won’t hit it… 6 hour tow home after playing in the dunes.
Apart from that and a snapped clutch fork, the setup proved capable and reliable. About a year ago I ditched the heavy awkward plywood canopy for a canvas one with removable steel framing, able to be folded away in the toolbox if need be. With a zip door on each side and flexi plastic windows, it’s great to sleep in. Next came a custom winch bar made by myself, to lose some weight and get a more custom look. (ARB bar approx 60kg).

Next major mod was fitting a set of Maxxis 285/75R16 RAZR’s, on Blak Trak 16x8 -22’s. They’re a whole inch taller than the 33X12.5R15 Buckshots I had previously, and skinnier too, so less tram-tracking on the road.
Fantastic tyre, stick great on gravel roads and quiet on the tarseal, good in mud too.
We are going to need some more pics of it's current form.
Here you go…

Yep, period correct ARB and white spokes. I guess the light bar isn't oh well.

That’s tidy! Got some specs?
Nice to see I’m not the only one with a plastic snorkel… 4 inch stainless all the rage.

Keeping it clean and under the radar lol. Its still a 2.8na diesel although I have a 1KZ for it which will go in next year sometime, can't rush these things...
Marlin twin cases 2.29/4.70 and twin e-lockers. Just running 33's, 4.88's and 3-4inches of lift; that's as far as I'm taking it's build= need to get it out more and use it now COVID restrictions, at least in Aus are starting to lift !
Plastic will do me see how it goes with a 3.0 Turbo though I've got access to an air restriction gauge if I need to, I don't like the look-at-me staino style and hope to stay away from that. An air restriction gauge will reveal a lot more than hype if needed :)
Actually talking to Cori at Kaiapoi now about a mechanical pump/turbo/injector combo now......

Bloody good. 33’s and 4.88‘s sound like an ideal combo, I’m running factory 4.55’s in mine and it’s a bit of a slug… your setup especially with lockers sounds pretty capable. Fair call on the snorkel.
Yep Cori is pretty helpful, make sure they get you a quoted price on parts first, I made the mistake, paid a bit too much for an exhaust…

And with an R151 box and Dyna 5th I can see me actually having enough power to use this gearing lol. With the 2.8N/A its flat ground only...
At 100 its only doing about 2200.
