I have a 1981 BJ44 that I am preparing to do a rebuild on, but in the meantime, I am adding a few items to make it drivable and fun until I'm ready for disassembly.

So, looking behind the dash plate, I have a blue electrical plug behind where a radio would go, but there seem to be too many wires compared to any diagrams I have. I compared it to both the 1983 FJ40 and the 8/80+ BJ41/44 JDM diagrams I have. Someone tapped off the LR (Blue with red tracer) wire and has been cut out...

Any help identifying what this was for would be appreciated. My first guess was radio, but maybe my harness came with AC wiring?

More info... This pic shows the plug just tot he right of the heater box in the right side footwell. Not sure if that helps anyone.

Aaaaaand of course right as I posted I thought I better check again with the voltmeter. Of course I realized I had some hokey ass fuse in the radio fuse block when I was testing earlier so I jumped the fuse block with a new 5amp and tested again.

Testing the blue red lead with key out, nothing. Turn to ACC and I get 24v! Pull the fuse with the key still in ACC and no power... Put it back and power!

So @mattressking pointing out that thread above helps me with my next question....

I thought all 40s only had one speaker? So where were the speakers in an 1983 FJ40/BJ42 and were there two of them?

There are only 2 speaker provisions for a 83 and 84 fj40 / bj40

the glove box one as in older 40's

the 83/83 ones had a 2nd speaker mounting location above the Drivers Side Fuse Box Location , there is a rather large VOID up in there , so Toyota finally wised Up and utilized it for something useful ......

You need to remember this isn't an FJ40. This is a JDM 24v Bj44, and if it's the higher trim, then they are 2 speaker trucks.

I'd loved to find the opposite plug for my blue one (same that's on the back of the radio pictures and in the linked thread above).

Also would love to know the terminal type used in these connectors. I found them for my '99 100 series, but have no idea on the 40 series

Here is your basic wire Diagram LIVE , you have the 9 pin connector .......set up

2 speakers ONLY

Not the 5 Pin extra one at top .....fyi

the L / w R tracer stripe wire is from your fuse box and KEY switch ACC Circuit .........

@ToyotaMatt yep... Found that wire earlier tonight.... I have power for my audio setup now.

Very helpful with that radio data sheet showing the inputs. If I can find the other plug partner for my blue one, I'd love to reuse as much of the stock harness as possible. You mentioned the second speaker was above the fuse panel? I'll have to look for an orphaned plug up there tomorrow!

both RHD and LHD variants ....

i think i have detailed Photos of a NOS late modle 2 speakers Radio FITTING KIT too ? 🤔

non-usa application of course , i can't see what would be different from a RHD to a LHD here ?
