Is it running yet?
No, I’m working on the front brakes and knuckles first, so it it on Jack stands. I’m just getting some knowledge about the engine for now so I’ll do that a little later. The front brakes need replacing and the front knuckles need a rebuild so yeah. I’m going to ask my local cruiser club for some help sometime soon too.

what’s the real story?

“I took my bj40 to a shop and they gave it back to me in pieces”
Bought a BJ40 in Costa Rica in person, everything was mechanically sound according to a mechanic I trust there. Imported it here myself, took it to the shop to get it looked over, the American mechanic told me it was all mechanically sound. Drove it for ten minutes home and the engine blew up. Rebuild time. They lifted the engine, and I had to rebuild the internals and head, so I bought a head and internals, and they could never put it back together for some reason so now I’m here. At least the engine is in.

They lifted the engine, and we took it to a machine shop to get it rebuilt. They put the engine back in and couldn’t never finish the rest because the main guy working on it got pneumonia halfway though and nobody else knew what they were doing

Did you buy a full engine kit etc, if so where from?

amazing they have it back in pieces,
even a pretend mechanic should have been able to put in back together again.

“Humpty Dumpty” might be a good name..

Did you work out why it "blew up"? Were the engine cyls bored and the block decked?

From what I understand, the engine overheated or something, but I reckon it was bad before that. It was kind of slow, and I should have realized it wasn’t running right in hindsight. It was going slow even for a B. A hose exploded on the highway and the engine locked up so I pulled over, and a ton of coolant was leaking everywhere. When the head was taken off, the sleeves had obvious signs of the piston dragging up against it, and it looked like the pistons expanded somehow. The engine block looked fine, and the machine shop didn’t say anything about the block being bad. (I took the engine to a separate engine machine shop specialist to get the internals assembled) The head needed to be replace though because it was cracked and warped.

I should have a lot of time to work on it next week or so because the quarter will restart then, and I’m about to submit all my college application stuff. This week has been really crammed with school so no much progress was able to be done unfortunately

you’re in high school with no tools and absolutely no mechanical experience whatsoever....

is it not possible to drop by a number of other shops or talk with some more experienced local land cruiser folks to point you in the right direction to a shop that can “put the pieces together again”.

This forum is amazing and the collective knowledge is outstanding.

What concerns me is basic safety, if you **** up one simple thing regarding brakes or axle rebuild it is in fact quite dangerous.

We/They/Us can tell you how to do this or that to get your BJ40 back on the road,

.....but if your truck scoots of the jackstands and leaves you with one less ‘sneaker’ with foot attached to your leg that’s not ideal.

I have a local cruiser club, and I’m being as careful as I can. The car is in gear and the ebrake works but I still have cinder blocks behind the wheels so it doesn’t roll. I have already asked the local cruiser club for some help and I’m setting up a wrenching session at my house sometime in the future.

Did you test it to see if it can roll? Im not sure the size of the cinder blocks, but if they are too tall the wheels can push them backwards. I like to use small pieces of timber maybe 75mm high and if cut an angle, even better. I usually throw a spare wheel under there as a back up to jack stands.

The truck was stationary when the cinder blocks weren’t there, and I think in this picture, there is about an inch between the cinder block and the wheel. The car won’t roll but the cinder blocks are there as a precaution because I live on a hill. The car is on a very gradual and barely round part but it gets steeper more down the driveway, and it wouldn’t be good if it started rolling so there’s the cinder blocks.

Thats not ideal. The blocks would just push away. You have to expect the unexpected. Wheel chocks should be hard against the tyre. Some times just leaning on a big spanner/wrench can induce motion. With a vehicles weight on your chest, you may not even be able to yell for help

Any progress young man
Small setbacks, wasn’t able to be on mud much because the quarter just ended in school and I had to turn a ton of stuff in, but I connected with my local cruiser club, and am going to their monthly meeting on Wednesday. Hopefully since the quarter just reset, I’ll be able to get a lot more time to work on the cruiser

I haven’t gotten a full nights rest in a few weeks but it should be okay for the next segment of time
