The R151F transmission I am most familiar with is the Turbo trans that came in the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Pickups. This trans has a bellhousing that mounts to the 22R(E)(T) series engines and a tailhousing that mounts to the RF1A gear-driven transfer cases commonly found in the 1979 - 1995 Pickups. And it has the more desirable 4.313:1 1st gear ratio for rockcrawling.

But I understand that the R151F also came mated to:

Land Cruiser:

  • 1986-1990 2LTE J70-J73
  • 1990-2002 1HZ J70-J79
  • 1998-2002 1HZ J100/J105

Hilux/Pickup:

  • 1997-2005 1KZTE N140-N170
  • 2006-2015 1KD-FTV N15-N26

4Runner/Surf/Prado:

  • 1990-1993 2LTE N130 4runner/Surf
  • 1994-1995 1KZTE N130 4runner/Surf
  • 1996-2002 1KZTE N180 Surf/J90 Prado
  • 2002-2005 1KZTE N210 Surf/J120 Prado
  • 2006-2009 1KDFTV N210 Surf/J120 Prado
  • 2009-2015 1KDFTV J150 Prado

Do any of these other trucks use the RF1A gear-driven transfer case? Or is the R151F/RF1A combo only found on the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Pickups?

Thanks in advance!

@Onur . Help.

You missed one detail. The R151F bellhousing does attach to the 20R/22R/22RE engine. And it does allow the RF1A to bolt to the back of the transmission. But, the bellhousing also allows the R-series transmissions to bolt to the bellhousing, not just the R151F. So you could bolt up a R150F, but you would need to use the chain drive transfercase.

Yessir, that's all true. If you had an R151F Turbo bellhousing, you could swap it over to an R150F transmission and run it behind the 20R/22R/22RE/22RET series of engines. And you would need to use a chain-drive t-case or an adapter for the R150F trans to RF1A gear-driven t-case.

But I am asking if there is an additional source for the 22R/R151F/RF1A transmission combo besides the '86 and '87 Turbo Pickups? Specifically, an R151F with a RF1A tailhousing.

For example, did the Land Cruiser Prados ever come with a 22R engine, R151F transmission, and RF1A t-case combo?

The reason I am asking - the R151F Turbo transmissions are difficult to source, but the R151F Prado transmissions seem more common. I want an R151F with the lower first gear. And I want to run RF1A t-case(s) without an adapter.

That is why I tagged Onur. He would know.

The r151 tailhousings are floating around. I think the 86-87 22ret USA and Canada models were the only market to receive them with an RF1A adapter. I haven't looked recently but $100 was the going price a couple years ago. You can swap the tail housing on most of the pre-1996 R151 transmissions listed above.

I think you can still buy the lower 1st and 2nd gears so might not be all that difficult to swap those on an R150. Might be cheaper than an import transmission

I actually sold my lower gear clusters in my R151F because they sucked behind my swapped 3.4 on the street. Just didn't match the power band. I put the 3.0 V6 R150 gear set in. I don't regret it one bit. Sold the bell housing as well. Made enough to buy a rebuild kit and some Marlin Crawler upgrades.

There was one for sale on Yotatech a while back. Not sure if it's still there.

I was actually thinking about a 3.4 liter swap. Great intel! Thank you.

I "think" the lower first and second gear were to compensate for turbo lag on a 4 cylinder engine. I originally swapped it in behind my built 22RE. It was an advantage on the trail and "ok" on the street. At the time my truck was my daily driver. It was just too low and too far apart for commuter driving every day. It was like using granny gear all the time to take off, yet 2nd was too high. I had 5.29's and 35's.

Just food for thought. So you might be better off with the late R150 that mates to the 3.4 and just get the adapter to run the RF1A case?

Sorry for the zombie post, but anyone know where you can find these gears? Thanks!

The lower 1st gear (4.313:1) gear set is available only through a used 1986 or 1987 Turbo Pickup transmission. There are no aftermarket or alternative sources.

The gears are still available from toyota. But the countershaft is NLA. I don't think the R150 countershaft will work but I might be wrong. Is that R151f specific?
