Mustard has a friend sleeping over for a bit. This JDM BJ44 belongs to a friend of mine and is for sale. Here is the link if anyone is interested.

A sausage dog eaten in a chicken coop? You southern guys 😂.

That is not nearly slathered in enough green chilli or gravy or grease for Mississippi.

Hes in the “Mississippi” part of Florida for sure

Looks like you pretty well burnt that dog too...

Project Mustard 78 2.0 has officially begun.

Last year a set of 3.70 axles…..40 front and 70 series rear showed up for sale here local.

My favorite combo for a 2F is a H42 4 speed, split case and 3.70 gears. It’s quiet. Revs out great on the highway and it’s a great shift pattern.

I moved them in the shop this morning and tore into them

We will replace as much as we can with shiny new OEM goodness but in the mean time I degreased them and pressure washed them to take to Powder Keg for a coat of pretty powder

It’s actually a pleasant day today so I loaded up the Goat for the 20 minute trip to the coater.

What kicked this project in gear on my end was this box that arrived from @orangefj45 and Valley Hybrids.

I wonder what all kind of goodies lie within….stay tuned for the cracking open of the crate tomorrow

There goes an afternoon that was supposed to be devoted to catching up on office work. Amazing thread, and full of pearls as we would expect from @wngrog

Looking forward to phase II as I am hoping that is in my future when @FJ60Cam gets a hole in his schedule.

Thinking about tackling the Sniper in the meantime, though my home rebuilt carb seems to be holding its own now that the manifold is not leaking vac like a sieve.

The great thing about dealing with Georg at Valley Hybrids is his ability to pick and pull from his massive pile of used parts to make it easy to put a driveline not designed for a particular model Landcruiser to go in.

@orangefj45 sent the crossmember parts. Shifter parts and some used 60 series shift boots (NLA new) as well as a fresh flywheel.

Diffs are loaded with Auburn Limited Slips which will keep Mustard chugging forward in the north Florida swamps nicely

I’d bet there’s a split case in that box and that axle allows an integrated ebrake ;) That’s why I’m running one on mine anyway. Why all the work/$$ and no H55 Nolan?
H55s shift like s***. This truck has no need for the low first gear so we are not sacrificing drivability for that gear.

High end the 3.70 gears get you within 300 rpm of the 5th gear and the new motor will be plenty happy cruising at 3000 rpm if needed.

FJ60 H42s can also use the 40 top cover so the shifter stays in the correct hole.

As for the original question, if I had a rear disc 70 axle, sure but we don’t but 60/70/80 rear drums are pretty bad ass. I’ve never had an issue with one that’s functional.

To follow up on @wngrog comments. I have a pretty good idea of how each of my cruisers get driven and try to plan things accordingly. This cruiser “may” see the occasional 4 lane highway but never anything more than that. The vast majority of its time will be spend on small backroads around my place. To and from the river. Stuff like that. If I need to get on the highway or interstate then I have other cruisers for that. Plus, I just think a 4 speed is appropriate in a 40 series.
