You're making my 75mph top speed and 12mpg average feel inadequate! 😆

Your not driving it hard enough. 3600rpm in 5th gear down hill and I can “almost” hit 100 fully loaded. 😎😬

Perspective of a 🤓

3.73 gr + 31.5" tire (bfg 33) 4th g @ 75mph = 2985 rpm

3.73 gr + 33" tire 4th g @ 75mph = 2849 rpm

4.10gr + 33" tire 5th g @ 75mph = 2647 rpm

First post here, though I’ve been a lurker for years. I have an 87 FJ60 that’s mostly stock except for an OME lift kit with shocks, leaf springs, and steering stabilizer.
Finally replacing the tires that were on it when I bought it - original KO’s 31.5x10.5x15 on some not stock steel wheels and 1.5” spacers.
So I’ve already been through the challenge of finding wheeels that fit without spacers. Settled on the TRD Pro matte black wheels 17x7.
So now it’s tire size time. I’m thinking of staying similar to what I have now with a 265/70/17 BFG KO2 (listed as 31.6) mostly thinking about driving up the passes here on the highway like Snoqualmie pass from Seattle. But also wondering about something like 34x10.5x17 KO2’s (33.5” listed) -just worried about hills. Another option I considered is a 255/75/17 (32” listed)
The 265 and 255 options are listed as about 46lbs while the 34 option is 58lbs. Plus the TRD Pro wheels are around 27lbs.
Any advice or thoughts very welcome.
And yes I’ve searched and looked around but am not finding much about the size with stock 2F and stock 4spd transmission/gearing and highway hills. Thanks!
I have 31x10.5 on stock 3.70 diff with an Aussie locker in the rear and a locked front axel.
The lockers make it possible to do a lot more in 2WD but the torque loss of even the 31" makes a noticeable difference off road.
I end up in 4 low just to keep from lugging the engine or slipping the clutch, this is kind of a PITA.
If I went to anything over 31 I'd get a 4.10 diffs. It think that even 4 low would be compromised with 3.7 diff and a tire over 31"
Going over 31" and the dollars really start adding up.
New wheels, diff change out, spare tire carrier bumper. It really snowballs.

You have a point. Even in 1st low and 235's it's too fast in the ledges even with 4.10's. The Best option is the H55F. The 1st gear is a true granny gear. 3.70 with H55F is better than the 4-speed with 4.10's. 31's, h55, and 3.70's would be a nice combo. Even 33's with h55 and 3.70's are better than stock.

No lift but a fresh stock suspension and 31” ATs look perfect IMHO.

Looking good! @NeverGiveUpYota is rocking 31's too. The lift with OME still looks fine with 31's, but more importantly is the ride. Old Yoda's were tough, but rough on the passengers. I'm thinking OME on my 1980 pickup too. It used to set tall now it's like a go-cart. Still rough though.

Fresh 31s here on a stock-ish OME suspension and newly painted OE rims in homage grey. Was worth the annual wash 😉

OP: having just switched to the 31s from 30s, I didn’t really notice any difference in the road. Slow before, slow now. It’s been so long since I’ve driven on 235s, that I don’t have any point of comparison.

Thanks for all the input and interesting sub threads here. I ended up going with BFG KO2‘s 265/70/17 on the TRD Pro wheels - no spacers. The ride is good and less engine droning noise at 65 mph and around 2700 rpm on stock 4spd. Local hills are still slow but not unreasonable. Now I just need to get around to getting the horrible purple window tint out.

Trash bag trick 😉👍. Makes it easy.

In Australia, the standard sizes available from the dealer were either 7.50/16 on a split rim, or 31x10.50/15 on a tubeless rim.
Most people eventually go to a 33x12.50/15, or the equivalent outside daim on a 16" rim.
I am still running the 31's on the original Toyota steel chrome rims.
