Update: decided that I needed to add some auxiliary power to my 4runner. The cup holder I recently installed blocks the factory 12v cig lighter making it almost inaccessible (esp if passenger side holder is being used). I decided to use the cubby space below the stereo to add some 12v power sources. I added one USB dual charger/volt meter and 3 cigarette sockets to power other accessories (GMRS radio, dash cam/gps...). I also removed the old wiring and switches for my off road lights and tied them all in using a 8 gang switch panel. I plan to mount my Midland GMRS radio just below the panel. (Not going to hardwire the radio because I want to be able to use it in other vehicles)

Midland MXT275 GMRS radio *installed.
I chose not to hardwire the radio so that I can easily transfer it to another vehicle if needed. I secured the radio using 3M velcro and retained the cigarette plug for power. The antenna cable is routed under the carpet and comes up the B pillar of the cab. When not being used the magnetic antenna can stay on the vertical part of the cab, to deploy I can unsnap two buttons of my Softopper and place it on the roof. The controls of this unit are all in the mic, it will be stored in the glove box to declutter the cab when not being used.

That is a tiny radio. I had my little Uniden CB mounted in the same spot. Of course with the transition to HAM I haven't had it installed since 2008. All the wiring and cables are still there "just in case."

Too late for your build, but have you ever considered springs from Northwest Off Road? They made some good stuff back in the day.
