Yes, a resto-mod. I have several "bad" switches. I'm always impressed with the switch over hauls I see here on mud, but I just have too much stuff to complete to drive this thing so I'm going with a switch pros RCR 12 mounted in the center console. I'm running 100% new wire and fuse box so it should be interesting.

As for the fish bowl, I actually paid a pretty penny to get a head unit which is highly visible from different angles instead of getting washed out in the daylight.
Interested to see how the SwitchPro 12 works out for you. Having been driving at night a lot lately in the 40 there is quite a lot of reflection from inside and outside lights on the glass. Perhaps a privacy screen wouldn't be the best option but an opaque screen film would definitely cut the reflectivity on the screen would definitely help.

I put some on my RamMount iPad and it made a huge difference.

Some mild window tint film might cut down on the window light reflections too.

I'm looking forward to doing a restomod on my next 40. I like where your going on yours with the Alpine unit. I looked at that same one for my 80. Just trying to figure out the execution of it.

Today I got my front heater installed. One problem with a lot of these is the ducting and rubber boots for the defrost vents. My boots were ok but had a lot of cracking and would probably fall apart shortly. The ducting turned to dust pretty much whenever I touched it. My solution was some new plastic-cloth ducting in an inch size that’s just barely bigger than stock so it would still fit in the boots and I used some heat shrink tube over the ends to shore up the boots. They are pretty solid feeling and the shrink tube isn’t that noticeable with it all installed.View attachment 2609386View attachment 2609387View attachment 2609389View attachment 2609388

What an awesome idea. I would've never thought of that, but I love it! Nicely done!

Nice work. With 19 hours into it, how many connectors, splices and wire replacing did you have to do? These harnesses take time to go through.

I only had to replace 2 connectors. And zero wire splices or replacements. The wires were all still supple and shows no signed of insulation cracking. As an FYI, the electrical system worked perfectly before I took it out. Amazingly the harness was 100% original, not a single PO hack into it. I was very lucky.

Ultra rare....FJ45 Locking Gas Cap on a 40???!!! You betcha!

So I sent @ToyotaMatt a PM on Sunday, asking if this awesome gas cap would fit on my cruiser. He immediately asks for a picture of my current setup...

I can say a few things...it's heavy duty, locking, the gasket is huge, the box... pure NOS goodness. I couldn't be happier! This was a great example of real time customer service and Matt taking the time to work with me to see if it would work.

My filler neck was from my original tub (3/73) and my new (I think poor wally tub) is from a (6/72). So I would think it would fit other pre-73 FJ40s as well.

Okay... I may NEED this.

Started the Holley Sniper install and pretty much copied what @wngrog did on mustard 78 and Texas red. Those threads were so detailed and good I couldn't resist. New battery and OEM fuel tank should be here by the weekend so there is a chance I'll see if this thing actually runs very soon after I adjust the valves and check compression again.

Sorted out some minor issues electrical issues and decided it would be a good time to upgrade the interior lights to LED. Didn’t know the headlight switch light or dashpad light existed until a few weeks ago when I saw a post on here - mine were burned out when I bought the 40. I went with natural white 4100k for the 2 gauge lights, looks a little brighter in the pics than in person but it’s a nice balance between the original 2700k yellow lights and the blue 6000k LEDs. Turn signal and high beam bulbs were replaced as well. Nice to finally be able to see the dash and knobs at night!!

I thought the dash light that illuminates the knobs was white, not green. White on both my ‘76 and ‘78

I’ve got a white LED in there, but the cover over the light housing is green so the light over the knobs appears green. All the pics I’ve seen have showed green light on the knobs but there may be some variation, I’m not sure.

Removed the extra long shackles and put in some stock size tri shackles from Ironman 4x4. Had to remove my caster shims from the axles that were there due to the long shackles as well. Lowered it down to 4" lift (from ~5.5"), and put on some new tires that will be better on the road than my super swampers were. Not quite as tough looking, but this will be easier for my 16 year old who is learning to drive.

Also, put in some sound deadener inside floorpan to help the noise just a bit.
