I have a lot invested in this AA setup but I’m starting to wonder if there’s an easier way to mount the SM465 to the 3 speed case.

Your right it may be different with the AA kit. With it installed the way they said that would keep the gear oil in the transmission,, but with the AA kit you want the oil to stay in the tcase
you still need to figure out what the original role of the seal was in the Toyota stock application
Was it to keep oil in tranny or to keep oil in tcase. , where in your application you want it to keep the oil in the tcase not on the ground lol maybe that spud shaft is worn out and wobbles and destroys the seal. U could also just order up the newer style spud shaft ,, too. ,, probably don’t want to spend the cash right now.
How tight is the spud shaft coupler on the splines ? Is it a pretty good fit?
Just pondering what cause that seal to get destroyed. Cheers
I just saw a post it note from where I ordered some stuff from AA and asked about that bearing. The guy said to get an off the shelf 6307 bearing. He said to mount with the spring facing the transmission. I bought a replacement bearing at Grainger (the one earlier in this thread) but I was wondering what the AA guy was saying about mounting with the spring facing the transmission. He was talking about the seal and I think the seal is a 6307. He was saying that seal should be
Installed with the spring towards the transmission. I think I now just need that spring. I’ll see if I can post some pics of that spud shaft. It’s out of the case right now.

The spring is usually part of the seal. If your seal doesn’t have it it may not need it.
Otherwise you will have to order another seal. Like form Toyota or a different brand. Did you look inside your seal ,looking gently ,
the spring may be inside there ,, you may have just missed it. It is part of the seal you can’t buy it separate

Man, I’m blind as a bat! Here it is tight in that channel on the seal!

There ya go. Found it. Haha
I can be a little dense sometimes. Ha ha!

I may call AA and see what a new spun shaft costs and what it would entail to work with what I have. I think what I have won’t require any machining. Does the new spud shaft setup require anything else? I’m ready to get this thing put back together and sealed up so I can get back on getting the transmission installed. I’ll hopefully be done in February at latest.

I don’t think I can use the newer spud shaft. My adapter is one of the old ones that’s around 8” long. The newer ones are 4.625” long. The driveshafts that came with it are supposed to be able to adapt to the longer length. I’m pretty invested in this setup but is there a better adapter? I saw a Custom Cruisers plate writeup on here but I can’t find that on their site. I would love to find an adapter like that that would allow me to use the original driveshafts.

Just rolling with what I’ve got. I put the new transmission to transfer case seal in with the spring facing the transmission. Put the spud shaft back in and tightened the locking but. Now I have to put the replacement bearing on and I should be good on the TC. It’s probably gonna leak like heck but we’ll give it a shot. This will give me an excuse to go to an Orion later on maybe.

One step forward and three back. Got the new bearing and seal installed. Got the adapter installed and rtv’ed. Then I broke a bolt off on the cover. Now I have to drill this out.

I got the flywheel and clutch installed today. I have the bellhousing sitting on there. I decided against using the flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate from the 72 Monte Carlo. The flywheel looked different and the clutch was like 10”. I had the flywheel that was already on it resurfaced. That was only $25. I bought an 11” clutch kit. The completely wore out one that was on it was an 11” so I figured I would replace it with the same size. I don’t know if that messes with the balancing if you change sizes. I bought it at Advance Auto and had some speed perk rewards so it was only like $105. The part # for that kit is MU5505-1.
I am also ditching the idea of using a hydraulic throwout bearing. The PO used the correct GM cast fork whenever they put the SBC in. The slave cylinder looks great and they mounted it on a bracket that should work with the SM465 with no adjustments (hopefully). I will add pics of it later.
All the seats are out so hopefully I will get to drop the transmission in the next week or so.

I don’t think they pressure plate will work with the Toyota clutch hydraulics
If that’s what you are still using? . I usuallly use a low profile pressure plate. That one doesn’t look like a low profile. Pressure plate

I usually use one that looks like this. What did your old pressure plate look like?
Flat fingers. Short throw ,quick ratio

Whew! You had me worried! The one that was on there was not low profile like the one you have. This is what I took off and it was working fine before I started this swap. I think I should be good to go.

I think the previous owner switched everything to a GM type setup whenever they put the SBC in. Here’s a pic of the slave cylinder mounted on a custom bracket. The old bellhousing I took off was a GM one. I guess that’s why everything worked. Here’s also the new (used) bellhousing on the SM465.

I’m ready to drop everything in now. Still gonna have to cut the exhaust but I want to start dropping it in to see where to cut exactly.

Had to cut out that section of exhaust. Looks like I’m gonna have to cut it back even further.
Got my brother to help me today and got a lot done. We loaded the SM465 and bellhousing in from the top using an engine hoist. We set up the transmission jack below for it to be secured to once we had it in from the top. It took a lot of moving it up and down and back and forth but finally got the input shaft to line up with the clutch. Used some longer bolts to pull the bellhousing to the block then used the regular sized bolts (3/8-16 1.5) to secure the bellhousing to the block. I have the transfer case underneath to see how it’s going to fit. It looks like the exhaust is going to have to be cut more back there.

Here’s where the rest of the exhaust is getting in the way of the transfer case.
