Hi everyone,
I just imported a 1993 HZJ77 land cruiser from Japan. It's currently on the ship and is 3 weeks out from arrival to NY!
It has 230,000 miles on the clock. 1HZ engine has been well maintained and runs strong. Zero rust on the body. Auto trans.
I was wondering what the expected value would be when it lands in the US given the mileage and current condition? There are no known mechanical issues.
How long should I expect this engine to last despite the 27 year age?

Here are some pictures of my vehicle:

Is it 230000 miles or klms? At 230000miles the engine and transmission are getting old. Looks like its 370000klms. They often go 500000+ if they are driven long distances and looked after. Lots of short trips kills them early, like all engines.
Usually the transmission goes before the engine
At least the mileage is probably honest.
Its a ZX so it should be full optioned. Pity about the black paint.
The FG flares are rust magnets, keep them clean around where they join to the fenders

Does it have a rear main oil seal leak, there seems to be some oil staining on the transmission cover?

Hello,

The stain in the transmission cover suggests an oil leak. Probably the shaft seals need replacement.

You may want to check the drive train for leaks.

Do you plan to sell it?

Juan

I may sell it if I get enough interest.

It should be about 10k to get it here. $6300 at auction in japan and another $3,700 in fees and transportation. If there really are zero issues and all the maintence is up to date add another 50%.

Not sure if it does. But yes, you can definitely see the stain. Do you have any experience with rear main oil seal leaks? How big of a job would that be for me to do? never worked on one of these before. And yeah it has 230k miles- not klms

Where are you finding HZJ77s for $6300?
They go for much more than that in Japan.

I saw a black 1993 with 371k grade 3 interior D on the sold listings for 657,000 JPY. What is the conversion rate on that?

They go for much more with grade 4 and sub 100 km. You can find the manual transmissions with lockers going for more.

A few of these have been listed on MUD, look for those threads and that will give you an idea of price.

The major items determining value, obviously condition and mileage. Optioned with manual, lockers, and added turbo would the most desirable. Color is buyers choice but most black JDM LandCruisers are repaints. I put this example with the limited info provided at $15k-25k.

What do the lower quarters look like behind the bumper cladding? :)

What does the rear floor seams and tool box look like under the carpet? :)

That was this truck, so you're right on target, although real end-to-end transit costs are higher.

Yes those transit costs were 5 years ago. I’m sure they have increased significantly. My point was to keep in mind what you paid for it. Fresh off the boat from a private party isn’t the same as retail from a specialist or a rig that has been long maintained and upgraded by an enthusiast who finally decides to sell.

I did the same thing when I imported thinking it was worth way more than it cost.

In this day an age its worth what someone is willing to pay you for it. Find a sucker and you'll make a buck. An educated buyer isn't going to pay you much more than you have in it.
The cruiser market is ridiculous right now. I've seen plenty of people paying dumb money for junk.

$3700 doesn't see that far off for transport to the east coast.

We’re in the classifieds, but it’s hard to tell if the OP is selling this truck or not? Forum rules require a price be posted for sale ads.

Buying a truck overseas sight unseen, and then joining an enthusiast’s forum in an effort to sell it without having ascertained for yourself what a likely resale price would be doesn’t seem like an obvious way to make money.

Not to step too far out of my lane but I felt it appropriate to close out this thread. I believe @Onur was able to get his eyes on this one and can verify that the condition was very workable. It reportedly sold to someone near the OP for $17,500.

Values for these continue to rise (as expected).

Quite a decent truck actually.

Needed some small items that they all need for an initial baselining.... but a very good platform.... demerits for the slush box... but a great platform for an H55 swap and a nice tasteful build. Almost no visible rust. Painted underneath like all of them seem to be these day...
