So these showed up... honestly totally forgot about ordering these but heck they were 12$ I believe. Good ole eBay buy, straight from China, ordered after reading some success from other mud users.. they claim to be Denso but they don’t look it nor have any stamping indicating that, but hey there here.. I did end up replacing the knock sensor I broke with a used one from a cruiser at Cruiser Parts LTD and that’s already installed so I’ll stick with it for now

Productive late evening, re-organized garage so second car can sneak in here with the snow we’re getting now, nice little setup workstation in the back! Installed all the new spark plug tube seals, they appear to be splitting a little but I’m not overly concerned...

Curious if anyone knows the approx bend of the baffle inlets on the bottom of the valve cover? Not sure if mine got bent up at the powder coating place or not?

Filled and sprayed each head bolt hole with brake clean and then some pressurized air, also used the air to get the coolant passage ways between cylinders! Some brake clean may have been inhaled haha

Was the valve cover media-blasted? If so make damn sure all the media is gone. Especially inside the baffle.

Correct it was originally jet washed and then it was bead blasted... cause jet washing didn’t clean it up enough. I used some compressed air and blew out up into the baffles from the bottom and then down through the top holes, some dust came out but nothing else, I know the powder coating shop I went too has done a bunch of valve covers before so maybe they did something to prevent any beads got into the baffles?

The dust from blasting gets in everything and is abrasive. I'd flood it with hot soapy water and pressure-rinse it. That baffle will have trapped that stuff.

Ok awesome! Thanks for the tip appreciate it! I’ll give the cover a dunk and then use my pressure washer to rise out inside of the baffle to the best of my ability!

So this has me a little perplexed... I’m not sure how a cam was rubbing here? My only guess is when the head was so out of spec and the engine was still running... when I overheated it cause of coolant loss. But when I look at the cams themselves they look perfect still... I know the head and the journal caps are aluminum but what gives the camshafts look mint. This is cap 7 on both camshafts, exhaust side is worse than intake.

The end play of the camshaft is built into the head and camshafts. The front journals set the end play and control movement of the camshafts forward and aft, it is not adjustable. Either your old head front journals were worn out of spec on the thrust areas or the camshafts are worn out of spec on the thrust areas, or both are worn. You'll need to measure end play once you have the new head. Unfortunately replacement of the camshafts is the only solution once you have replaced the head if it is still out of spec with the new head.

This does make sense, however even without any caps on with the end play on the front thrust areas of the camshafts they don’t move enough back and forth to contact where it was rubbing on cap 7.. that’s why it has me so confused

How hot did the engine get?

Around 240-250F read on the obd2 gauge a few times when the fan blade went through the radiator, then shut off, Ive also had overheating problems all summer long after buying the truck, regularly seeing temps in the 230 range

Roughly... A piece of aluminum at a length of aprox 30 inches, with a temperature rise of about 90-95 degrees C, it is possible the head expanded enough to contact the camshaft. A rough calculation based on the expansion of pure aluminum says that it could have grown in length by as much as 0.067", but I'm sure the alloy Toyota uses is more stable than that. In any case, the camshaft would not expand nearly as much as the head since it is made out of steel. I'm curious if anyone else has seen this on an overheated 1FZ?

Man thats crazy! Im going to measure the camshafts for spec Via instructions from the FSM and ill get back to you! Thanks!

Standard thrust clearance is 0.030 - 0.080 mm. Maximum is 0.10 mm. This is usually checked by placing a dial indicator on the end of the shaft and moving it fore/aft to see how much the needle moves. If you are using the commonly available online '96 FSM, both the spec and the procedure are on page EM-46.

Were you able to order the exhaust valves? What's the ETA on your new head?

Cheers, I do have the 1997 FSM hardcopy but it is in the truck and the garage I am using, So ill have to take a look at it later.

Yes! new exhaust valves and all 48 new keepers on their way should be here Friday and sending out intake valves to the machine shop tomorrow. As for the head who knows  I've messaged the parts distributor I ordered it from but he says Toyota does not provide him with that information so he doesnt know timing either, the estimation was 1-2 weeks but this is the 3rd week now...
