Replacing TRANSFER CASE SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR (1 Viewer)

The gear, as LITP posted, is PN 33403-69055. I got it from MegaZip or PartSouq (shipped from Japan). It came with all the little goodies pictured in the bag. Since I didn't have the correct drive gear per the thread above, a correct used drive gear was purchased from SOR, their part number 070-31A-U. Couldn't find a new one, and the SOR price was reasonable. Both parts installed fine in my 1974 solid case. I've clocked about 2k miles on this setup.

With the above 2 parts, I'm 5% under on my 33x10.5 BFG KO2 ATs. So 50 mph on my speedo is 52 mph on my GPS. In fact, "adding 2 mph" works well for all the speeds I drive since its a narrow band on these things. I also verified the 5% under on the odometer over a 30 mile drive. When doing the math for MPG, I add 5% to my odometer mileage to get a more accurate result. Different tires will obviously have different results.

HTHs!

I looked on a parts site that shows the actual part numbers. Shows 3/69-12/78 one part number using a 18 teeth driven gear and a 1/79-7/80 another part number using 16 teeth driven gear. My 79 unfortunately has a 74 transfer case. My guess because the piece together a shift linkage instead of changing the high/low shift so it pointed forward they didn't bother switching the drive and driven gear. The 79/80 part number is 33481-60030 and NLA. Because this one showed being used for 16 teeth would probably be the best fit for 15 teeth driven gear on the split case. SOR shows this drive gear good for 58-80. First few years of the FJ40 it used a different case. Toyota also offered higher gearing than 3:70:1 the first couple years. Know of a case where someone switched a offset diff rear axle for the centered their 62 had. First time went in 4WD the front was trying drag the back. Would have to dig out an old micro-fiche but guessing had more than one part available in the those years.

Yep, my 1974 case had the 33481-60020 drive gear and the 18 tooth driven gear as you note. As the 33481-60030 is NLA, I went used SOR.

Bummer on the solid case. I’ve got a split case sitting in my garage with a attached parking brake. Some day....

The 1/79-7/80 part number o
In the US is 33481-60030. Everything I find for drive worm gear is 6. Personal think they would all work. I my difference is probably the shape of the worm. The later one designed for a 16 teeth driven gear would probably be a better fit. Spline count is wrong on the split transfer case and won't work. SOR listing it 58-7/80 is not correct. If they just piece them all together who know which one your getting. Wrong one will work but for how long. See I didn't post yesterday when I wrote it.:hmm:

So SOR sent you a drive gear marked 6X16?

From post 54 of the previous linked thread:

There's only two drive gears... 33481-60030 and 33481-60020.
For the 6x15, 6x16, and 6x17 you need 33481-60030.
For the 6x18 you need 33481-60020.

So if you already have a 15, 16, 17 you can assume you have 33481-60030 installed in your transfer case already... and therefore you can swap between the three driven gear accordingly.

If that quote is correct, if your driven gear is stamped 6x16 or 6x17 and is factory you should be fine for a 6x15 gear (PN 33403-69055). No other changes than the new driven gear required. This is because the same drive gear works for the 15, 16, and 17 driven gear. A 6x15 gear works well on my setup (33" tires, 3.7 diff), and gets me to 5% accuracy.

If you have a 6x18 driven gear, you'll additionally need to swap your drive gear to PN 33481-60030 (NLA).

PartSouq still shows the 15 tooth driven gear available: 3340369055 Toyota GEAR SUB-ASSY, SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN (ATM), Price: 20.04$, Weight: 0.045kg - PartSouq Auto Parts Around the World

Below are the pictures of the driven gear I received after I opened it. Also are the drive gears. One is original to my 1974, the other was used from SOR. Hard to make out the numbers. The original on the left looks like 6x18. The used SOR on the right I had to purchase looks like its stamped 6x17 when you zoom in. I've got 1700 miles on this setup.

Looked at your link and says out of stock. Same with all the other links I checked when I googled the part number. Think this is quickly becoming a NLA part. Probably because of mud.

During this time period all the drive worm gear had six grooves. Can tell the picture lower count driven gear will larger space between the teeth. This will allow a larger contact area between the two gears. Think the 6X18 would work with less contact surface most likely the nylon driven gear would wear out faster. Fewer teeth on the driven gear the faster it's speeds at the same RPM of the transfer case output shaft.

Wow! They showed them available when I posted it. Now they don’t. That was fast. MegaZip was already out.

After a number of requests for the part in a short period of time decided to show it out of stock.

A year ago I ordered a part from a place in the Middle East that said they had a NLA part in stock. I ordered and paid thru PayPal. After a few weeks I got a refund and email saying they didn't have the part. When I search the part number this place still shows they have it in stock more than a year later. The driven gear I ordered last year off eBay. I see none are available on eBay anymore.

I also have a December of 1974 fj40 and just went to 3.7 gears with 33" tires. I located a 15tooth driven gear, do I have to change out the drive gear also? If I do need to change that drive gear out what is involved to do that? My driven gear has 18 teeth currently, it was easy to get it out but is removing the drive gear more involved? Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

See my post 27 above. You'll probably need to remove your drive gear and replace it. If your parking brake isn't in top shape, now is the time to fix it up and maybe use a double seal to stop any future leaks. Think Mudrak and Georg (Valley Hybrids) both offer the double seal if you need it.

Got my new transfer case gear. There is a small amount of grease on it, will it be lubricated inside the transfer case or do I need to lubricate it prior to installing?
Where did you find the transfer case worm gear I am looking for a gear and the spacer

Not exactly sure what you are asking about. Spacer 90560-35082 is showing available on MegaZip. However since both that and the drive gear (33481-60030?) are no longer available, you might have to find them used. I got my 33481-60030 used at SOR.com.

Both 90560-35082 and 33481-60030 are showing available as a used part at Spector Off Road.

You can research your part numbers at this link after you put in your correct market, year, and model: TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 40 55FJ40LV-KCJA - POWERTRAIN-CHASSIS - TRANSFER GEAR | Japan Parts EU - http://www.japan-parts.eu/toyota/us/1979/land-cruiser-40-55/fj40lv-kcja/4_791410_009_/powertrain-chassis/3610_transfer-gear?pnn=33481P&pa=33481-60030#36231A
