Why no diesel swaps in 100 series LC’s?? (1 Viewer)

So, I’m a big fan of diesel motors for the obvious reasons, tq, fuel economy, longevity, but mostly the sound of a turbo spoiling up justifies any additional cost, right?🤣
I have a 2001 Hundy with the original motor/trans, and am seriously considering a repower with a diesel, but is it just me, or is this not a thing with the 100’s? I see lots of 40’s, 60’s, and 80’s with diesel swaps, but no Hundy’s??
So, is there some reason this is not a more popular swap? School me!

I would think the more complicated electronics would be one reason. And many people prefer the solid front axle setup in the earlier generations of landcruiser.

To me a diesel 100 swap would be great, but the price of gasser 100's where I live has risen to the point its almost not worth it to buy one and all the swap stuff. It's getting awful close to just buying and importing a diesel 100 from elsewhere.

Good points. I am not a super hard core rock crawler type, and prefer the IFS for the diving benefits it has.
 
the 100 series came I believe with the 1HD-FTE in Australia and other places around the world. This engine is a computer controlled engine so installation would be a bit trickier. I suppose one could swap a 1HD-FT to keep it simple but don't know what parts in the computer in the vehicle would rebel against something like that. I don't know if the gas 100 was ever sold in Australia, if so then I am sure that someone has done the diesel swap down there. Might be worth looking around in the different diesel facebook pages from Australia, see if you can find any 100 series groups on Facebook. Also ask this question in the 100 series section if you haven't already done so.
 
Many places you need an as new or newer engine for swaps, so you're getting into the computer controlled engines and a lot more complexity. I know people that are swapping Duramax and Cummins engines into other vehicles, though. Still, like was mentioned, with the computers and newer equipment you're looking at bigger price tags for everything.

I have been thinking of a DMAX swap, or a R2.8. Big difference, I know, but a DMAX swap would be amazing!!
 
The 6.6L DMax is a BIG engine. The 2.8 DMax would be nice for a swap into something that doesn't need a full beast of an engine. I know a few people with Canyon/Colorado pickups and the "mini" DMax is a sweet engine if you're not towing heavy or hauling a full bed of gravel.

Right, it’s a 402 block, and dry is about 800lb. About 300lb more than the 4.7 that’s in the LC. My thought was that if people are doing LS swaps into LC’s, why not this? After all, I’m a male American, bigger is better, right? 🤣🤣
If I had my druthers, I’d get the 4.5 out of the AUS 200’s, and drop it in. But those no be cheap!!!

You can get an HZ (still made so no issue with engine date) and turbo it. May not be the fastest or more powerful option, but it's a one wire engine and with a turbo is much more drivable...

The big question (to me, since I’m not up on all this) is where to get the motor, and all the parts & pieces needed. Also, what about the trans and gearing? How does one figure out that stuff? A 5 speed trans would be a huge improvement as well...
 
Lots of guys here (@orangefj45 for example) can get you the engine and transmission combo. Auto to auto will be easier, but you are still going to have to play with the wiring a bit. With the 5 speed you can probably reduce this, though you will need to know what to keep more than what to remove from the electrical system.

But seriously - it is quite a common swap in Australia. 105s that is - people don’t normally bother with the IFS partly because your typical 100/IFS owner isn’t so into engine swaps and partly because the exact same car came factory fitted with what is generally accepted as the best Diesel engine ever fitted to a 4x4, certainly in Australia and I’d say the world too ;). We do get the v8 petrols but their torsion bars and chassis are different to the factory diesel variant - all adding to the reasons people don’t swap. I think Grahame of Gturbo fame swapped an FTE into his lx470 though.

You’d want to swap the trans with the engine unless yours is manual - the engine and trans ecu are one. Otherwise nothing else electronic will “rebel”. Best to stick with factory stuff a simple and reliable swap that is guaranteed to work well. 1HZs are a poor choice IMO given the amount of work. IDI, thirsty and gutless for what they are and when turbo’d have a penchant for cracking heads and pistons. The DI factory versions wipe the floor with them and the FTE is the final iteration. The engine management and wiring is actually pretty basic - not hard to sort out.

My guess is that it's expensive, hard to find, fab/wiring as in any swap and *most* don't swap with the IFS.

My bigger sticking point is that the 2UZ is a good engine, super reliable, good power. There aren't really any "downfalls" to the 2UZ other than MPG and power (it's not bad on power...)

As with most diesel swaps, you just have to WANT the diesel as it will almost never payoff unless you absolutely need the MPG benefits for remote running, or you get the diesel/parts very very cheap.

Best would be to get a front cut from an hdj100 and do a full loom swap along with the engine. To make it fit with the rest of the wiring you’d want to get one to suit the update status of yours (pre or post 2002).

You won’t find a better engine on reliability and longevity Than the FTE and is respectable stock power wise but really wakes up to a few mods. Heaps of companies here specialise in getting more power out - 400hp and 740ft-lbs+ is achieved quite regularly and Doesn’t significantly hurt their longevity, the internals are incredibly robust
