Crisp new panels.
with Acrylic paint, let them dry a few weeks before re assembly. trust me, don't be tempted. you will chip, scuff and ding your new paint.

previous owner had put some rattle can black on the radiator support. and it showed, came off with just a whisper from the sand blaster.
Note the AC condenser, full of mud and bugs, have a new one waiting to go in.

blasted my flares, made a paint mistake ages ago. I didn't re-prime between putty coat and jet black top coat. they cracked and got crows feet.

the same with the lower cowl and lower windscreen panel. easy to take it all off and learn from the experience. never used high build putty again.

Next up a bit more maintenance.
that's oil that has leaked out of the viscous fan hub.

Viscous fan hub. I've read that you drain overnight and refill with 2 bottles of silicon oil. I was impatient, petrol works really well to dissolve all the gunge that has built up. stripped and cleaned the outside, then the inside.

pulled the whole lot out. New belts, hoses and a new water pump. I don't want to go back in anytime soon.
So following @Onur on his build has been a huge inspiration to keep going. though I don't think he'd appreciate the re-used bolts and unorthodox fabrication :) here is my take at the BJ74 series inter-cooler.

Had to fabricate up new radiator mounts to move the whole assembly back by ~80mm. The water to air intercooler's heat exchanger will go in between the AC and the radiator. the fan shroud received a trim in the middle, the outside rim and the section under that's half indented for the lower hose. bolted all back together and tested how much the engine moves around through the rev ranges. rough idle has the most movement. there is atleast 30mm all the way around the fan and the shroud.

The engine moves SIGNIFICANTLY when under load/WOT. Driving with the hood off for the past 2 weeks has made it apparent why there is such space between the radiator/fan shroud and the fan itself.

That said, interesting placement of the barrel. Good luck!

Good to hear you say that about movement.

Sometimes under load I see the gearshift move and it makes me wonder if the mounts we worn out. (they still might be) but that kind of confirms you saying it that it moves quite a bit so it's probably normal.

I'm still trying to figure out the best intercooler setup, and not have hoses all over the place with tons of bends. Almost no easy way around a 90 degree bend off the turbo and back in...on a 13BT at least. Of course we aren't talking about high-performance engines here though :cool:
 
Had to redo some paint after I've installed the antenna and 4 pin bulkhead fitting. Plan to use it for camp lights, light bar and solar panel on the roof cage with common earth.

Looks on the piss, but the radiator is just sitting there while I bolted down the intercoolers heat exchanger. Made up a bracket that picks up on the m8 nuts inside the chassis rails- that holds the power steering cooling tubes.

Painted all the brackets and fan shroud. All fits well. Just waiting on some Al pipe and I'll have her on the road for a test.

Hows the progress on the intercooler going?
 
Its been awhile since I've been on, but as always tinkering away.
had the valve cover off and checked the valves. 1st time tinkering internal. most of the valves were reasonable.

This has been in the works for awhile. Those that are on bj74 owners page on Facebook may have seen some of my mods.
Seats were cracking and tired. I get a sore back on long trips so it was time for an upgrade.
Seats were rebuilt by first class motor trimmers in Perth, he even suggested pump up lumbar support for a reasonable price. they work like the blood pressure cuffs.
I was stunned how bad the seats were before, the difference is night and day better and the pump up back support is great.
wanting to go touring this year, I would like to protect the new seats. purchased a set of canvas seat covers from supafit- photo for those who want to order a set. fit like a dream and have map pockets in the rear.

Another small mod, but the best ones are easy. 10mm LED strip lighting housed in aluminium case and bent to follow the contour of the roof. wired into the cabin light. Camping is soo much better now :)
