i’ve decided that if i replace one calliper i should replace both so ill get some later this week. my kids also want me to paint them red so i might just do that. any haters of that idea that would say i shouldn’t! i figure that if painting your truck red adds 10 hp then painting the brakes red must be like putting oversized rotors right?

i had a hard brake line break so i’m building some new ones. i’ve never done a brake line flare but i bought a tool as i want to try to make all new lines for my 40 build anyway. here’s my first go at it. this tool is specific to 3/16 line and double metric flare. you can’t use it for anything else. but that’s what makes it nice. it worked perfectly the first time (i guess i’ll see how perfect it really is when i install the line and see if there are any leaks)

here’s the flare

and if there’s any confusion out there the guy at the parts shop measured the original nut and it is a 10mm 1.0 thread pitch nut. there are some posts out there saying 1.25 pitch but that’s not what was measured yesterday.

i rocker guard painted my wheel wells. the box liner is was all chipping off and looking like crap. new shock on. knuckle on. tomorrow seals and hubs. i have a broken lower shock bolt that i can’t get out. i’ve welded on a nut and it’s broken off twice. i might need to drill and tap it out. that’ll be fun

Hi, Try driving in 3 rd gear not overdrive . Is the vibration still there? Mike

so i drilled out the bolt on my shock mount and after tapping it i couldn’t get a bolt to grip so i welded a bolt into the hole that’ll act like a stud now. worked well

then while reassembling my spindle i realized my brass bushing was stuck to the axle and has been spinning inside the spindle. it’s worn down and won’t press fit in anymore so i’ll have to buy a new one tomorrow

lastly i got my hubs put back together

@cruiseroutfit to the rescue again. OEM bushing here on canada $190 plus 10 days to get it out of california. i got it from kurt for $67 including shipping and it’ll likely be here faster. i guess i’m still down for the week though so i’ll have to take my mini van fishing this weekend

bushing installed perfectly. no damage to inside of the spindle. both sides are all buttoned up. now just some brake line work and i’ll be able to fill with grease and gear oil and bleed the brakes. little by little. it slows things down when you find other problems that’s for sure but it should all be good for quite a while now

the red brake look pretty cool
poking out from behind the 5 spokes!!

i also think i might have found my oil leak. there’s no washer on my drain plug and after cleaning the underside the only wet spot i see is my oil drain plug. so ill get a new one and see if that seals it up. otherwise i might be dropping my oil pan again next oil change.
one more leak i’ve found though is between the transmission and the rear housing over 5th gear. it’s clear fluid not engine oil. i’m just going retorque the bolts and see what happens. i might need to drop the transfercase and reseal it

done. oil changed. brakes bled. knuckles and diff filled appropriately and now building a new battery cable. it was pretty corroded.

getting ready for a long road trip. driving to grand canyon next week. it’ll be a 19 day round trip. hope nothing goes wrong. if it does i’ll be sending an SOS from the community!! going to hit yellow stone then down to craters of the moon then to grand canyon. back along similar route but going a little east to monument valley and through moab. can’t wait to see these areas. it’ll be new territory for my family!!

good news is my brake lines dont leak. bad news i just reinstalled my speedometer ratio converter after having it repaired a second time. i didn’t even make it to work before it stopped working...again. there’s got to be an inherent flaw in its design is it keeps doing this. ill be buying a new one now as this one is crap!

made it from saskatoon to billings montana and now to west yellow stone. montana is such a beautiful state. yellowstone park is quite stunning too! we’re spending the day tomorrow before continuing south

here’s my watchdog waiting by the truck while i load it from the hotel

i think my engines rear seal is leaking. my oil pan bolt wasn’t the only think leaking. thanks also have a bunch of diff oil come up through my compressor. i haven’t been using the locker at all so not sure why it’s making such a mess. seems like it’s venting through there making me think my breather tube is plugged.
here’s a few from yellowstone today

craters of the moon today. what a neat place. my kids loved it. climbed a small volcanoe and explored some caves. the weather was a little Canadian today too. it snowed!

i must say it does feel a little strange having all my truck pics sitting on pavement but that’s the nature of this trip i guess. (and yes i need a new headlight)

so i drilled out the bolt on my shock mount and after tapping it i couldn’t get a bolt to grip so i welded a bolt into the hole that’ll act like a stud now. worked well...

The stock setup for the front is a welded stud on to the spring plate.

the spring plate on mine had a smooth stud the shock goes on that is threaded inside. a bolt with a large washer threaded in and hold the shock on. my 40s have the plate with the threaded stud on it. i don’t know which one the 60 use but the ones on my 62 definitely use a bolt that threads into the stud
