Catching up on some stuff I wanted to share.

I went and got my emissions checked so I could update my registration as required by law.

They do a mirror check under a car... ( it is just a glance) I passed that part.

Then they stick a probe in the tail pipe to sniff the exhaust.

For my 1979 Landcruiser...

Hydrocarbons less than 400 PPM
Carbon monoxide less than 4%

I failed this portion of the test. And I believe because I had added all kinds of additives to the gas tank to keep the gas fresh as possible.

I desmogged my truck when I first got it.

No air pump, plugged the holes in the exhaust manifold where the air rail was.
No EGR, and plated/plugged offending holes

I learned that the fuel is cleaner today than yesteryear.. 10-15 ethanol and even E85

But when I got it tested years ago, I used regular 10-15 ethanol fuel 87 octane.

Here is that years emissions test. AS YOU CAN SEE I PASSED WITH 317 PPM HC AND 3.14% CO which is less than 400 and 4.0

So back to my failed emissions test.

I had a 1/4 of fuel of non-ethanol regular mixed with 10-15 ethanol regular and every fuel additive I could think of using... Stabil, Sea Foam, Lucas. Since my truck was under restoration 2 1/2 years I would add more of each just for good measure.

So this was the contents of my fuel the day I first got it emissions tested

I decided I would add 5 gallons of E85 to the tank and go for my second test.

Here are the results.

What a difference it made!!! Second test same day 219PPM HC and 2.5% CO....PASSED!!!!

And this is sweet music to the ears of every owner of desmogged trucks that are between the antique and not antique years.... Also, I suspect that TN has looser emissions laws because we are not part of the Marxist/Socialist/WhackaJob Colonies of the United States.

(No offense to those FJ40 lovers who are part of the above cults. ((oops, there I go again))).

Any vehicle in Texas 25 years old or older doesn't have to be tested for emissions; only a safety inspection of lights, horn, brakes. Don't know what the limits are to pass an emissions test.

Loving Texas!!!

I also changed out the bushing in my spare tire carrier.

The hardest part of that was driving out the pins... I did not have a BIGGER BFH so I took my carrier to Gene, our mechanic, and he put the ole "air hammer" on it!! That did the trick!!:bounce2:

Note: The "Air Hammer" is the only way to go. ;)

Trying to drive out the pins with a BFH was only gaulding the ends of them, making the process even more difficult. :crybaby:

I also added a grease zerk to the upper hinge.. hopefully it will help keep them new bushing nice and greazzy..

Bronze Bearing ---- McMaster Carr Item # 5448T19 Multipurpose Flanged Sleeve Bearing 16mm shaft dia, 20mmOD

EDIT:
Link to the BRONZ BUSHINGS ----https://www.mcmaster.com/#5448T19

16mm ID x 20mm OD x 16mm length by 2mm thick.

The pins in my carrier are 16mm dia and the hinge is 20mm dia.

I cleaned everything up good and used my vice to press everything back together.

The bushings only go into the tube part of the hinge, they will not fit in the part that mounts to the truck.

WOW,WOW,WOOOOOOW! Douglas I had know idea when were talking the other night that this was what you had done to your LC. Just finished reading all of your build thread, and I'm blown away! Your attention to detail and commitment to doing it right are amazing. I now know where the ALPHA rustic green FJ40 resides in Williamson County. I could sense the other night at dinner that you are itching to do this all again. I would like to help you out, by volunteering my sad little rig to your continued growth as a master FJ builder. When can we start? All joking aside that was amazing! I'm really glad you're so close, and I can use so much of what you did in my own project. If you let me know what kind of beer you like, I'll stock the mini fridge in my garage and give you the garage code to let yourself in anytime. Congratulations! I can't wait to see it for real.

Could you kindly supply a part number for the rear view mirror you installed?? I've been wanting one with the night/day lever forever!!

Outstanding build BTW, I love your attention to detail .

After 6 years of wanting to replace my TRE I finally did it..... back In MAY...... and now that it is SEPTEMBER I will post some pictures.

The biggest take away from this mechanical adventure..... use the ole BFH.... and if that doesn't work grab your dad's BIGGER F_CKING HAMMER!!
Hit the them square on the end and they will pop right out of the hole.
Count the remaining treads out of the tie rods ends from the tie rod itself...... this will keep it close for alignment.
Finally, go put it on the alignment rack and let the professionals square it up.

My daughter made homecoming this year, which I am very proud of her!! She wants to use the 40 to ride around in the parade.

So I have to do a few things that I didn't complete last November.

List
1. Mount half doors.
2. Mount half door barrel latch plate to rear sill.
3. Mount half door hinge on truck, which will be 3 hinges on the back
4. Modify hinges so they will come apart.
5. Mount new side mirrors to body.
6. Install seat belts....
7. Take top and doors off.
