Please see below. These were my repairs by Toyota SService:

1. The engine was brought with high revs at iddle, no overheating and no other problems;
2. This happened after putting approx 20 l diesel in the fuel tank and driving it for approx 30kms;
3. Previously the car stayed park approx 8 months with very few fuel in the reservoir and only driven occasionally for 20kms at 2 weeks interval.
4. The injection pump has been rebuilt;
5. The timing was done correctly.
6. The engine is overheating and blows smoke, not particularly any color.

- what is the current situation, Toyota report:
AFTER REPLACING THE COOLANT AND FUEL FILTER AND ADDING FRESH DIESEL WE FOUND THE BUS STILL WAS OVER HEATING, THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF A WATER LEAK, WE REMOVED THE THERMOSTATE FOR WATER FLOW BUT STILL OVERHEATS, WE HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION IT HAS MORE UNDERGOING ISSUES THEN JUST THE INJECTOR PUMP THAT WAS OVERHAULED TO CONTROL THE OVER REVVING. WE BELIEVE IT HAS A BLOCKAGE IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM OR AN INTERNAL ENGINE COOLANT LEAK.
NO FURTHER ACTION OR CHARGES TAKEN. GUEST ADVISED HE WILL HAVE IT TOWED.

Questions:
1. Any idea what happens?
2. Please advise possible causes that you can see for about what happened till now;
3. Any idea how can be diagnosed... just want to be sure the workshops don't take advantage of me... :(
4. What is a decent time and money cost wise diagnostic?

Thank you A LOT for reading this and for replying.

  • Any videos of the smoke?
  • Does it clear up when the engine is hot or does it continue?
  • Is the fan on a viscous hub and has this been checked?
  • How old is the radiator and what kind of shape is it in?
  • Any engine photos.. Inline or Rotary pump?

Also.. it sounds like the high idle is fixed? I hope it didnt cost much because it was probably just the leather diaphragm.

Thank you for answering... yeap, here you can very easy get tricked and this is what I got from dealership... they rebuilt my injection pump all together for a diaphragm and it cost me all together 1500 aud for rebuilt... I could not take the car from there because I was afraid that the high revs were too ...high and did not know what can happen...
As advised, the smoke is dense and uniform but no color ... I do not have a video because is still there and did not pick it up ... I will have to tow it.
The smoke doesn't clear up at any time is all the same all the time.
I do not know about the fan what means viscous hub... it look all the same as any other one...
The radiator might be original... but as advised I did not have any problem with it or overheating before the problem with high revs... so ... I doubt it could suddenly began to overheat if it has dirt in it... the shape ...hmmm, it looked like a normal radiator, rectangular... sorry, cannot say now...
It has a rotary pump and high revs are fixed now...hehehe, after replacing the pump...

Thank you again for taking the time, much appreciated... any idea how can it be diagnosed from here on?

Sorry initially I said the diesel engine has been rebuilt...no, it was the injection pump... maybe I was too tired when wrote...

It really sounds like its massively overfuelling.. until that is sorted its pointless chasing any cooling issues.. a diesel specialist needs to see this.

Can you smell any burnt coolant odours? I think you need to get it to a radiator specialist, all the corrosion could be blocking the radiator core. What model is your Coaster, BB32, BB20?

No smell.
The diagnosing and work was done at Toyota dealership. I did not agree and quite understand why they did what they did and also in what order but...
It's VIN number starts with BB21... so I assume it's a BB20 series...
Moreover, the radiator did not have any trouble before the high revs... would you think the corrosion just blatantly starts to circulate and put blockages or is a more gradually process...? I am not mechanic but I would not think that the corrosion would suddenly block and overheat...
Maybe overfueling would be more likely...? from injectors...? they also said that the fuel was blurry and dirty...??

And yes, the injection pump is inline... thank you for correction.

What do you think?...
Also, again, I very much appreciate that you took the time to read and make a suggestion... thank you a lot !!

If someone has rebuilt the pump , it shoudnt be overfuelling. But when you rebuild a pump, you should also rebuild the injectors.
Did they actually rebuild the pump or just fix the high idle? The high idle is a fairly cheap job.If they rebuilt it, they can usually give you a list of parts that were replaced.

It can happen after long periods of doing nothing, then when you go for a drive it begins flaking off and blocking the radiator. It can also happen by mixing 2 types of coolant.

WE BELIEVE IT HAS A BLOCKAGE IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM OR AN INTERNAL ENGINE COOLANT LEAK.

If Toyota said this, its probably worth investigating. How many klms has this engine done?

So its probably a BB21R . Is it a 3B engine?

Yes it is 3B engine with 177k km on board. They also flushed the radiator and they confirmed there were not any traces of rust... just mixing coolant...

One thing that often makes them overheat is lack of pressure in the coolant system. The hoses should be firm after 10 mins of so of driving. If the coolant system can not hold pressure, the coolant will boil at a lower temperature.
A new radiator cap and a close examination of the hoses and clamps is a good idea.

Thank you a lot for your time! I will ask them to check...thank you.
