Spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to do the front kick out/ step

Finally decided to run it longer than just next to the main box I had some DOM from a metal tech family cage that will need a new bend, but should work great. Thanks @7powernerd for the design help.

Plan is to make the box out of aluminum. I went to the metal shop to see what thickness I need. I have support on the bottom every 19" by 24"

They have excess 3/16 sheet aluminum, they are wiling to sell me for the 1/8 price.

Any thoughts on this decision?

On one side, with that thick sheet, I would have much less structure needed.... maybe none at all. The metal shop said they could brake the pieces to basically give me angle iron on all corners, then just spool gun it together.

If my math is correct, 1 sheet of 1/8 aluminum is 85lbs, so 3/16 should be about 127lbs. I need about 4 sheets on this project, so that would be about 168 lbs more. That seems like the only downside.

@cjmoon interested to know what you think.
 
Got my son to help flip it over last night, and started to add the rear sections

seems like over kill. You talked me into a 3/16 for over the 1/8 for the floor. I'd go thinner than 1/8 on the walls than thicker.

ok, question to the masses. was looking at boxes to attach to the side of the trailer, above the fender and found under truck boxes are almost what would be perfect, but they are a little deep.... easy enough to cut down and reweld.

Just wondering if anyone found a company that makes them about 12" deep.

More progress. Found some dimple plate at my metal supplier, so wanted that for step areas; however, it woudl not feel good to put a knee or sit on, so just used it on the step location. Might go back and add a patch on it on the rear section if needed in a bolt on formation.

Here is the tube work. Overkill, but will allow me to have no fears about bumping around a tree.

Per the instructions had to reinforce the plate for the suspension. Sorry for cruddy welds. Very hot welds, so no fear about them ever breaking. Much grinding is needed. Also added the quarter circles for the mounting points for the main box.

and at this point, all the major fabwork is done for the trailer steel structure. Need to drill holes for some side marker lights and add some tube for wire channels.

My plan is to clean it up nice and then take it to get galvanized.

Man, she's nice and stout. I like it and good call on the galvanizing. If you don't mind posting up the process and cost, I think that's the way to go, but I always worry about welding to it down the road. I change my mind a lot. :)

@kc_chevota Grabbed all the parts I needed to make the hitch. Started putting this together, however think I’m going to mimic @cjmoon version. Here is Jess‘s version. Don’t get confused the side nearest my foot he Made two ends on it. The first side was looser than he wanted, so he flipped it around and did the other.

Just to document. 1.5” OD .25” wall DOM. Cut to 1.5” width using the same 1” bolt welded with a coller made out of the same DOM

Spent 30 minutes on call with Daystar today trying to find that bushing.... never came up with it.

That is such bs. Here are 4 part numbers all the same thing some with Greese passages some without. Not sure which brand is which. All Jeep cj/yj shackle end front or rear 1978-1995. They way companies try to make there product not seam universal is BS. Rant over.

I did cut them down to shorten for my coupler application.
