You must be an engineer. That's a very pragmatic approach to the problem. If there wasn't a wife and teenagers involved, that would probably work.

Ha! Well, I'm a Sales Engineer :) Admittedly, my plan didn't account for a spousal unit or rug rats. That would definitely blow my suggestion to smithereens. I'm taking my dad (who will sleep the whole way), my spouse (who will talk the whole way) and my dog (who just likes to go anywhere I go).

DAAAAAD? WHAT ARE YOU DOING???

Ok guys we need to start making some moves on specific plans. Austin guys minus @geanes are you all going to caravan and meet up in Moriarty the evening of the 11th? Since I'm coming from Dallas I may just go straight to Moriarty and meet others there.

This is all 2 weeks from today! exciting.

I'm in for a Moriarty meet up. Are you planning to get a hotel room or camping somewhere there?

Great. I will probably get a room. @TXSunDevil you have a room right? Or is it someone else.

I have a reservation at the Best Western. No bar but I have a flask. Couldn't find a hotel with a bar, but it does have a pool that my kids will appreciate after a long drive.

Sweet! I'm really looking forward to HIH8 and running trails with everyone. I've been off-road many times on motorcycle and atv, but this will be the first time on serious trails in a full size vehicle, so super excited. I'm also ready to get out of this heat for a bit. Can't wait for the cool Colorado mornings.

Ok so there’s 3 of us at least. I may book best western as well for convenience. @alpine357 depending on your route and plans maybe we can meet up and caravan some of our drive thru Amarillo and across 40 to Moriarty.

Best Western works for me. We should definitely meet up in Amarillo, if not before. Maybe Wichita Falls?

Takes one to know one.

I assume you'll take 380 all the way to Decatur. I will take 35 up to Denton then hop on 380. I'm fine even meeting in Denton. We can pick a time that works. I'll shoot you a message with my phone number and we can figure it out.

I just booked the Best Western for the night of the 11th.

@atnolan94 ... looking like I might be rolling through Moriarty in the early AM (between 7-8am). I'll let you know soon as I might be able to intercept you guys there and caravan from that point.

I hope to be leaving Moriarty around 7-8 (but obviously am flexible with the needs of others). That would time beautifully if you ran in to Moriarty and we could all keep rolling together.

That way can all start our final stint with a full tank in the truck (and an empty bladder :flush:).

FYI, it's about 200 miles from Moriarty to Bloomfield, which is a full tank of gas when I'm towing something (or really loaded down) and I'm close to running on fumes. If you want to play it safe, I'd recommend stopping at a truck stop/casino that is just northwest of Cuba called the Apache Nugget. There are only a couple of sketchy options for fuel/food/bathrooms between the Apache Nugget and Bloomfield, and they're about 70 miles apart.

Thank you for the tip Marc! Now looking at the map, that is a long haul!

I get about 275 miles per tank. That stretch of US 285 in between IH-40 and Roswell I get closer to 15 when heading South. I agree that on the res on US 550 there are definitely some sketchy areas. I am trying to get everyone to hydrate before we get to 9,000' so a stop at the Apache Nugget may be in order.

Dumb question that I don't want to ask everyone. Do people need their own air compressor? Is it best just to air down when you get there keep and eye on pressure, then air back up at the end? Are there plenty to go around that people are happy to loan around from vehicle to vehicle? For those that have been, just curious if this is something I HAVE to pick up or not.

I was talking to Connor yesterday an he said last year he aired down to 20-ish and left it there the whole weekend. There should be places to air up around silverton, ouray, etc...so many jeepers and other offroaders that need it. I'd also imagine some people around camp will have compressors.

You do not need your own compressor to get by at HIH. Having your own is nice but not a necessity since so many people will have some kind of air up capability. Depending on your trails and how much pavement driving you will do, you'll likely just stay in the low-20's the whole weekend. One exception would be if you're driving all the way to Ouray, I'd probably go back up to something over 30. The road between Silverton and Ouray is not a place you'd want to have a blowout or a tire unseat itself.
